He Hit Me
The Crystals Lyrics

He hit me
And it felt like a kiss
He hit me
But it didn't hurt me

He couldn't stand to hear me say
That I'd been with someone new,
And when I told him I had been untrue

He hit me
And it felt like a kiss
He hit me
And I knew he loved me

If he didn't care for me
I could have never made him mad
But he hit me,
And I was glad

Yes, he hit me
And it felt like a kiss
He hit me
And I knew I loved him
And then he took me in his arms
With all the tenderness there is,
And when he kissed me,
He made me his

He hit me and it felt like a kiss
He hit me but it didn't hurt me
He couldn't stand to hear me say

And then he took me in his arms
With all the tenderness there is

this song is not about enjoying pain. it is far from it. it is about being in a destructive relationship, a woman who is being subjected to domestic violence, yet she is so in love with him that she cannot leave him for abusing her. that's why "it felt like a kiss" is in the title, because she is blinded by love. it's a situation many women, even men, can find themselves in and is heartbreaking.

Perma Frost

@Namby Pamby she never said she was happy to cheat, or happy to hurt him, she was only happy to be hit. The violence was a sign of live to her. It doesn't even say she cheated! The song says the boyfriend "couldn't stand to hear that I had been untrue". It's quite possible that she didn't even cheat at all, but that her actions were interpreted that way. You hear this song and think it's about a sadistic cheating woman? Where? Who hurt you???

Perma Frost

@Richard Bono sad that she regrets this song. If I met Carole king I would tell her to be proud of this masterpiece of a song. The lyrics say one thing, the music says another. The music sounds like descent into madness, and a warning that somethings wrong, even though the words say "everything is fine, nothing to see here". I think that perfectly describes many dysfunctional and abusive relationships.

Perma Frost

@alex krasnic yes those are the lyrics. BUT THE MUSIC is saying so much more! Do you not hear those strings, that sound like the stabbing-scene music in the movie "Psycho"? The dissonance, the minor chords? The lyrics are saying "I'm relieved he forgave me", the music is saying, "you're in danger girl! Run for your life!"

Perma Frost

@Deborah Petty right. If cheating is unacceptable to you, break up with them; or if you wanna make it work, forgive them. No hitting!

Perma Frost

@alex krasnic of course she cheated, this guy treats her like crap, she probably didn't even cheat, but the abuser is convincing her that talking to another boy is flirting or cheating.

This song is not endorsing abuse but exploring what the mindset might be for someone on the receiving end in an abusive relationship. It’s a classic. The Motels did a great cover of it in the 80s, also worth a listen.

Perma Frost

Carole king says she regrets writing this song that glamorize abuse, but it really doesn't, and she has nothing to regret.

Grizzly Bear also did an amazing cover of it in 2007.

This song was WAY ahead of its time as far as subject matter goes.
