A Thousand Hours
The Cure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For how much longer can I howl into this wind?
For how much longer
Can I cry like this?
A thousand wasted hours a day
Just to feel my heart for a second
A thousand hours just thrown away
Just to feel my heart for a second
For how much longer can I howl into this wind?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Cure's "A Thousand Hours" delve into the feelings of hopelessness and despair that can arise from a prolonged sense of pain. The repeated lines of "For how much longer can I howl into this wind?" and "For how much longer can I cry like this?" express a sense of futility, as though the singer is crying out for relief from an unyielding and uncaring force. The image of a "thousand wasted hours a day" adds to this feeling of endless repetition and the sense that nothing will ever change.

The final lines of the chorus, "Just to feel my heart for a second" provide a glimmer of hope in what is otherwise a very bleak song. The idea that even a brief moment of feeling something can make all the struggle and pain worthwhile is a powerful one. However, the fact that this feeling is so fleeting only serves to emphasize the greater sense of desperation that pervades the rest of the lyrics.

Overall, "A Thousand Hours" is a moving tribute to the power of emotion and the human spirit, even in the face of difficult and seemingly insurmountable challenges.

1987 was one of the best years for music if you were 17. Little did I know what was in front of me, the personal shit was immense but at every turn you accept and adapt, never give up. You sort of evolve within what was already there. Just bad choices make your life harder than needed to be . Its just nakering you need to go through them. Im now 51 and understand so much more about about everything Ive learned. Clarity is never done but you will get there. You are who you are in every year from 7 upwards. Always be the best you possibly be. A thousand years are not enouth for some cunts. I got it in A thousand hours. The Cure are one of the Top Ten Bands in The World. Everything IS what it is.

Die hard fan here. I have seen the Cure 11 times in my life. They were the soundtrack to my teen years in the 80s. Nothing like it.....KMKMKM will always be my fav album by The Cure. Yes, I love them all, even the newer ones, damn, this album is QUINTESSENTIAL Cure music. And this song, the lyrics are so powerful!!!

Right there with you. Throw in Echo and the Bunnymen, New Order and the Smiths. But the Cure is my most listened to these days.
