Hot Hot Hot!!!
The Cure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The first time I saw lightning strike
I saw it underground
Six deep feet below the street
The sky came crashing down
For a second that place was lost in space
Then everything went black
I left that basement burning and I never went back
The second time I saw it strike
I saw it at sea
It lit up all the fish like rain
And rained them down on me
For a second that boat was still afloat
Then everything went black
I left it underwater and I never went back

Hey hey hey
Well I like it when that lightning comes
Hey hey hey
Yes I like it a lot
Hey hey hey
Yes I'm jumping like a jumping jack
I'm dancing, screaming, itching, squealing, fever feeling
Hot hot hot

The third time I saw lightning strike
It hit me in bed
It threw me around and then left me for dead
For a second that room was on the moon
Then everything went black
I left that house on fire and I never went back

Hey hey hey
Well I like it when that lightning comes
Hey hey hey
Yes I like it a lot
Hey hey hey
Yes I'm jumping like a jumping jack
Dancing, screaming, itching, squealing, fever feeling
Hot hot hot
Hot hot hot, hot hot hot

Hot hot hot
Hot hot hot
Hot hot hot

Hot hot hot
Oh

Overall Meaning

The Cure's "Hot Hot Hot!!!" is a vivid account of three personal experiences with lightning that are both exhilarating and dangerous. The first time lightning strikes, it occurs while the singer is underground, resulting in the ground shaking and everything going black. The sensory overload creates a rush of excitement which the singer enjoys. The second strike of lightning is on the sea, where it momentarily lights up all the fish in the water and rains them down on the singer. The third and final lightning strike is incredibly intense and hits the singer in their bed, throwing them around the room and ultimately leaving them for dead. Each time lightning strikes, the impact is so strong that the surroundings are muted, and the singer is left in a state of awe.

While the song is filled with vivid and exciting imagery about lightning, the lyrics may suggest there is a deeper underlying meaning. It can be interpreted that the lightning represents moments in life that leave a profound impact on a person: the kind of moments so intense that it changes the way they view everything else. While these moments of danger may be initially thrilling, the aftermath of the destruction serves as a personal wake-up call, and the singer must move on from it, never to look back.

I love all his little sounds. The little whoos and mmms just MAKE this band ✨️

@KnuckleHunkybuck

Probably my favorite are the three little hisses he sneaks in on Catch after the line "I always used to wake up sore".

@@KnuckleHunkybuck I just went and listened to it - you're right, that's so cuuuuute

@KnuckleHunkybuck

@@PrinceOctober3579 I wasn't initially sure it was him making them, but if you watch any live performance, he does it. He even does it on the music video.

@PrinceOctober3579

@KnuckleHunkybuck  He's such a treasure. I'm actually really glad you brought that song up, because I realised I heard it when I was a kid and I remember googling the lyrics trying to find it, but couldn't. Finally found it again! Sorry, I know this is a bit of a ramble, but I'm so happy I found it again <3

@@PrinceOctober3579 Fun story: I bought Galore back in the late '90s, and it was a big staple of my CD collection. Sometime in the early '00s, it disappeared from my collection, and I assumed it ended up in a different box than the rest of my CDs when I moved. I always thought I would find it again, so I didn't want to replace it.
After more than 20 years, I finally bought a new copy. I knew that there would be familiar songs that I hadn't heard in a long time, but I was not prepared for track 2. I completely forgot Catch existed. As soon as the opening drumbeat started, all the music and lyrics immediately flooded into my memory, and I instantly remembered how intensely I loved a song that I hadn't thought about in 2 decades.
That happened 2 days ago, and I've listened to Catch at least 50 times in the last 48 hours -- no exaggeration.

lol, and you thought your reply was rambling!
