I Dig You
The Cure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I dig you, you dig me
I dig you, you dig me
We dig each other
That's groovy, oh yeah

I dig you, you dig me
I dig you, you dig me
We dig each other
That's groovy, oh yeah

That's groovy, oh yeah

That's groovy, baby
That's groovy, baby

Overall Meaning

On the surface, the lyrics to The Cure's I Dig You appear simple and straightforward. The repetitious refrain of "I dig you, you dig me" followed by the declaration that "we dig each other" is a clear expression of mutual attraction and fondness. The declaration that "that's groovy, oh yeah" strengthens the sense of joyful abandon and carefree affection. However, there is also an understated quality to the lyrics that hints at deeper emotions bubbling below the surface. The repetition of the same words and phrases suggests a certain level of insecurity, as if the singer is trying to convince themselves (and perhaps their partner) of the authenticity of their feelings. The lack of additional details or descriptors further reinforces this sense of vague unease or uncertainty, as if the singer is struggling to articulate the full depth of their emotions.

Alternatively, some listeners might interpret the song as a parody of hippie culture and the exuberant, often drug-fueled proclamations of love and peace that came to define that era. From this perspective, the relentlessly sunny, upbeat lyrics of I Dig You could be seen as a sly commentary on the superficiality and naivete of the hippie movement. The repetition of the titular phrase, in particular, could be interpreted as a send-up of the repetitive, mindless mantras that became a hallmark of the era's spiritual seekers.

Best love song ever written.
Simple and to the point lyrics: mutual communication.
Upbeat drums: happiness and bliss.
Dirty, nasty, gritty guitar: passion and sex.
My answer to any "best love song" query.

My nephew is 16. His dad committed suicide when he was 14. I'm the crazy Aunt and had to try and help lighten his mood. Hence, this became OUR song! Love to all!!

I was listening to xm radio one day and they were talking about this song. The Cure was already a band. As a gag they relased this song under a different band name. Cult Hero. All of the band members ARE playing on this song accept the lead singer. It turns out Robert Smith asked his mail-man if he wanted to sing and he did.

Ron Buil

damn, I thought this was Robert Smith doing an impression. Pretty disappointing
