Lovesong
The Cure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am home again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again

However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you

(Fly me to the moon)

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am free again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am clean again

However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say

I will always love you
I will always love you

Overall Meaning

The Cure's iconic song Lovesong is a hauntingly beautiful love ballad that speaks to the endless depth of emotions that one can experience in a relationship. Sung in Robert Smith's signature melancholic style, the song is a poignant tribute to the singer's wife and muse, Mary Poole. The opening verses convey the comfort and sense of belonging that the couple feels in each other's presence. The repeated line "Whenever I'm alone with you" conveys the idea that the only time the singer truly feels himself is with his partner, a sentiment that is echoed by the line "You make me feel like I am home again." The feeling of being whole and complete when he is with his partner, as described in the lyrics "You make me feel like I am whole again," speaks to the idea that the singer views his partner as his other half or soulmate.

The chorus of the song, "However far away, I will always love you / However long I stay, I will always love you / Whatever words I say, I will always love you / I will always love you," is a universal declaration of love that speaks to the infinite nature of true emotional connection. The repetition of the phrase "I will always love you" drives home the idea that no matter what happens, no matter what life throws their way, the love these two share will remain a constant. The addition of "Fly me to the moon" at the end of the chorus shows the willingness of the singer to go anywhere and do anything for his partner, for their love transcends the limitations of time and space.

In the second verse, the lyrics take a sentimental turn, speaking to the rejuvenative qualities of being in love. The imagery of being young and carefree again is summoned by the line "You make me feel like I am young again," while "You make me feel like I am fun again" speaks to the joy and laughter that being in love can bring. Finally, "You make me feel like I am free again / You make me feel like I am clean again" echoes the idea of redemption through love, that it has the power to heal us from our past traumas and emotional baggage.

Overall, The Cure's Lovesong is a timeless masterpiece that captures the emotional rollercoaster of being in a transcendent relationship. Its hauntingly beautiful melody and poetic lyrics continue to resonate with fans of all ages to this day.

@LOL-cringe

He wrote this song about his wife that he had just married a year earlier and they’re still happily married over 30 years later. Can you imagine having one of the greatest love songs of all time written about you? F**king epic 🥺

@silvergirl7810

I glad you told me that! ❤❤❤❤❤
Edit: I looked it up- they got married in 1988 and he said he never wanted to have kids as he wished he never wanted to be alive or that he never had a choice in the matter- and, they never have.

@priscy6105

@joecitizen6046

In August of 1988 when he was getting married, I was on an army field exercise. But when I got back, I was married on September 10, 1988; just a few weeks after Robert and Mary got married. We're still married as well. Love lasts and so does this song.
