Like You Used to
The D.O.T. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a time when we?d be the last to leave
Watching the sun come up while everyone fell asleep
The music was always loud and I?d smoke and drink too much
Until I?d fall in your arms and into your lovin? touch
Now as the years roll by, time has reeled me in
I?ve slowed down a notch or two from the way things were then

Those old ways of mine, I?ve left them behind
Those crazy days are through
The only thing I still do like I used to do
Is carry this torch for you

Remember the days when we?d pack our bags and run
Chasing a crazy dream into the morning sun
Now as the twilight falls, I find I?m satisfied
Watching the fire glow as long as you?re by my side
Here in my heart it seems, time has passed me by
I love you as much today as the very first time

Those old ways of mine, I?ve left them behind
Those crazy days are through
The only thing I still do like I used to do
Is carry this torch for you

I still want you the way I wanted you then
If I could do it all over, I?d do it all over again

Those old ways of mine, I?ve left them behind
Those crazy days are through

The only thing I still do like I used to do
Is carry this torch for you

Overall Meaning

The D.O.T.'s song "Like You Used to" is a nostalgic ballad about the passing of time and changes in a relationship. The singer reminisces about the past when he and his partner were reckless and carefree, staying out all night, drinking, and smoking. But now, as the years have rolled by, he has slowed down and matured, leaving those old ways behind. The only thing that remains the same is his love and devotion for his partner, which he carries like a torch.

Throughout the song, the singer describes his contentment with the present, as long as his partner is by his side. He mentions their past adventures of running away together to chase a dream, and how those memories bring a smile to his face. Even though time has passed him by, he still loves his partner as much now as he did when they first met. He would do it all over again if he had the chance.

Overall, the song captures the sentimentality of growing old together while still holding onto the memories and love that started the journey.

Listening to this song play on the radio, driving across the state on a highway on my way to my job at 6am was the most soothing and satisfying thing ever. No cars in front of me, in back of me, on the side of me, just open highway on a dark road only lit up by street lights and the slowly rising sun. That shit made me feel alive in ways I can't even explain or understand. That's just what good music with good vibes does I guess.
