Whatever It Takes
The D.O.T. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus: x2]
Whatever it takes (and) we gots to separate
Whatever it takes all these true from the fakes
Whatever it takes (and/'cause) this is how we show and prove
Whatever it takes 'cause we ain't got nothin' to lose

Whatever it takes
Face to face with aggression, debolish and molish the opposition
Armored to be the stronger and conquer my competition
This ammunition, fills a vision that makes decisions
I told you once before but it's obvious you didn't listen
So listen closely, or next time you want to quote me
and take my advice, you'd be wise to not approach me
And learn your lesson, hit this class and you're over session
Found the test and had no idea with whom you're messin

Whatever it takes (and) we gots to separate
Whatever it takes all these true from the fakes

Transformin' the mindset, but how quickly do those forget
One hundred miles to run and ain't even broken a sweat
Until the death, we won't settle for nothin' less
No need to creep you knew we was comin' but still you slept
But it's time to rise up was just built up from deep inside
Actin like you was down now that leads to a collide
Best to recognize, starin' at me, because you shook
Whatever it takes, is what it took

This is our house
and this is where we live
and ain't nobody
gonna mess with us, in our house
This is our house
(This is our house)

[Chorus]

[Repeat x5]
Whatever it takes!

Whatever it takes whatever it takes
This is our house
This is our house!
This is our house!
This is our house!
This is our house
This is our house

Our house
Whatever it takes whatever it takes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The D.O.T.'s song "Whatever It Takes" convey a sense of determination and resilience in the face of challenges. The chorus repeats the phrase "Whatever it takes," emphasizing the willingness to go to great lengths to separate oneself from falsehood and pretense. The lyrics suggest that this determination is a way to show authenticity and prove oneself in a world where there may be many who are fake.

The first verse discusses facing aggression and overcoming opposition in a competitive environment. The singer describes themselves as armored and strong, ready to conquer their competition. They imply that their decisions are guided by a clear vision, and they have previously offered advice that went unheeded. The verse also warns against approaching the singer without caution, as they have the ability to teach a lesson.

The second verse speaks of transformation and the ability to quickly forget previous accomplishments. The singer suggests that they are capable of great endurance and will not settle for anything less than the best. They express a sense of disappointment with those who appear loyal and supportive but ultimately let them down. The verse suggests that there will be consequences for those who betray or underestimate the singer, urging them to recognize the potential clash that will result.

The bridge emphasizes a sense of ownership and protection over a metaphorical "house." The lyrics suggest that this house represents a personal space or identity that the singer and their allies fiercely guard. The repetition of "This is our house" reinforces the message that they will not allow anyone to disrupt or disrespect their unity.

Overall, the lyrics of "Whatever It Takes" convey a message of determination, self-assertion, and the willingness to overcome challenges. The song encourages individuality, authenticity, and the protection of one's own space and identity. The lyrics imply that there will be consequences for those who underestimate or betray the singer, emphasizing the importance of not taking their resilience and determination lightly.

People need to wake up and stop believing that every frontman has to have this perfect X factor voice. I'm a big fan of Rob Harvey and think he was great in the Music and is great in the D.O.T because his voice ISN'T perfect but still unique! Skinners production is superb as usual.

I also discovered these the same way you did. Brilliant music they're producing together, why change what's working.

I miss mike skinners voice haha but the d.o.t are really awesome and mike skinners producing is great with rob's amazing vocals, can't wait to hear more and more :)

Nik O'Connell

Good song , just happy to see mike still making music , missing the streets though

deathcabie7

Mike, I really wish I knew what all this means. Are you producing from now on? You know it would not hurt if you dropped a lyric or two on this already impressive D.O.T songs!

Chris Franzi

I'm surprised....this video needs more views....too many people must be missing out on how damn good this is

Tharpopolis

I'm sick of going to these videos and seeing the top comments saying Skinner should sing on these songs. I've never really listened to The Streets that much... I'm actually getting into this band purely because of Rob' s amazing vocal work. I think what they're doing now is working perfectly and nothing should change about this song or any other for that matter. Am I the only one that discovered this music because I'm a fan of The Music and Rob and not The Streets and Mike Skinner?

IV EV

Still one of their best songs, oh shout out for Rotterdam footage with the crazy yellow houses

Coltaine707
