Break it down
The DX Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you ready?
You think you can tell us what to do?
You think you can tell us what to wear?
You think that you're better?
Well you better get ready
You bow to the masters...
Break it down!
D-Generate into something fool
We just got tired of doing what you told us to do
That's a break boy (Yeah...)
That's a break little man
Break it down!

D-Generation X! (2x)

You think you can tell me what to do?
You know who you're talking to?
Well you better get used
To the way the ball bounces
I see what you got
It measures in ounces
Well that's a break boy (Yeah...)
That's a break little man
Break it down!

D-Generation X! (2x)

Think you're a big man?
(laughs) I'll treat you like you're a little man
Yo tell me what it's like
To be half a man
It must break your heart
To see what I am (What?)
But that's a break boy (Yeah...)
That's a break little man
Break it down!

D-Generation X! (2x)

Think you can tell me what to do?
You know who you're talking to?
Just stop wanting me
To be like someone else
Put it away
Like a book on a shelf

That you can read boy (Yeah...)
That you can read little man

Overall Meaning

The DX Band's song "Break It Down" is a strong call to action, daring listeners to challenge authority and break free from expectations. The song begins with the lines "Are you ready? / You think you can tell us what to do?" which sets a defiant tone for the rest of the lyrics. The band stresses that they won't be bound by trends or other's opinions, saying "You think you can tell us what to wear? / You think that you're better? / Well, you better get ready." The chorus "You bow to the masters... / Break it down!" is a clear reference to rebellion against those who would try to control them.

The second verse is equally abrasive, with the line "We just got tired of doing what you told us to do" being the most notable. The band members assert their individuality and indicate that they're leaving behind restrictive expectations. The chorus repeats with the addition of "D-Generation X!" shouted twice for emphasis. The final verse directly addresses the person trying to impose their will on them, practically daring them by saying "Think you're a big man? / (laughs) I'll treat you like you're a little man." The final lines serve as a reminder that every individual deserves to be themselves, stating "Just stop wanting me / To be like someone else / Put it away / Like a book on a shelf / That you can read boy / That you can read little man."
