Boys Better
The Dandy Warhols Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Boys had better beware
You could seem to color your hair.
Or on a wig, you already spent
All the dough to cover your rent.

But not so cool man
If you care, for all the
Other boys caught in your
Bleach job hair.
And girls better beware.
Boys, you better, you better.

Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah

Boys said
She had,
Like God's hands.
A-men

Boys had better beware
You could seem a wasted affair
And like a bitch you already spent
All the dough you promised your friends

But not so cool man if you care
For all the other boys caught
In your bleach job hair.
And girls you better beware,
Boy you better, you better.

Oh man it's not fair
To all the other boys caught
In your bleach job hair

And girls you better beware.
Boys, you better, you better.

Overall Meaning

The Dandy Warhols’s song Boys Better is a commentary on a specific type of individual. The song targets those who alter their appearance or lifestyle to fit in with certain societal norms or trends, regardless of whether it truly makes them happy or not. The lyrics encourage boys and girls to beware of such individuals, as their actions may negatively impact those around them.

The first verse specifically calls out boys who color their hair or wear wigs to fit in with a certain social group. The lyrics suggest that these actions may be financially irresponsible, as the individual may have spent rent money on their appearance. However, the song ultimately focuses on the impact of these actions on others, rather than the individual themselves. The chorus warns boys to be aware that their actions may negatively affect others who are caught up in their “bleach job hair.”

The second verse expands on this theme, calling out those who spend money on their appearance to the point where they can no longer follow through on financial promises to their friends. Again, the song focuses on the impact on others - in this case, friends left in the lurch by someone who has prioritized their appearance over their responsibilities. The repetition of the “boys better beware” and “girls better beware” lines further stresses the message that the actions of individuals will not only affect them, but those around them.

Overall, Boys Better is a commentary on superficiality and conformity. The song warns individuals to be aware of the impact of their actions on others, rather than just focusing on themselves.

@@mankuro It was pretty great, and I took FULL advantage. I’m an L.A. native, and I started going to clubs pretty young.

I stopped early, too: I had stopped going out completely when I got engaged in 1990, so I completely missed the “Entourage”-era LA scene of the early-90s and most of the music (I didn’t miss The Breeders, tho!).

By dumb luck, we moved to Seattle in ‘94, when I was about 26 and still young enough to still have fun. Seattle was AMAZING back then. It was so innovative and fresh and intimate, the opposite of LA.

And now I’m old and boring and okay with it, but it’s fun to look back on it sometimes. They really were some good times: the last, idyllic days just before the Internet.

I never even saw it coming.

Cool, but not coolest, the early to mid 90's for many of us was somewhat like the psychedelic era 60's in attitude only upside down and 30 years on. before everything got cashed in by the corporates.

I love this video (and song), it has a really authentic fun vibe. So much great footage of the Dandy's in the 90's and you almost feel like you're back in time on a trip with them
