Hailing from the South Bay… Read Full Bio ↴There are three bands named The Darlings.
Hailing from the South Bay, Californian punk rockers; The Darlings have been making quite a name for themselves. With their self-titled, self produced album available from Spydersurf. The Darlings have been grabbing everyone’s attention. They have toured besides punk rock legends like Bad Religion, Pennywise and Guttermouth. Their début album The New Escape was released late 2010.
The Darlings, a power-pop quartet from Bangkok were born in 2003 after it became clear to the band's members that drinking whiskey and listening to records wasn't enough.
Distorted fuzz and incompetence. The Pop-Punk/Nerd-Rock do-wop power balladeers otherwise known as The Darlings don’t leave much room for objectivity: their music – best described as ‘sugar-snaps marinated in a can-o-whoopass’ – provides a purely visceral buzz, kinda like downing half-rack of Mountain Dew while inner-tubing, pellet gun in hand. Their live shows can best be described as “four demure boys getting metalheads and knee-sock clad P-rock Lolitas to chime along to the ‘oh-oh-oh-whao-wo-oh’ choruses of catchy, mid-tempo anthems (‘Faraway’, ‘Worse’), and tear it up for the hook-filled shredders (‘Who’s The Asshole’, their newest and, possibly, best song).” Comparisons to Weezer abound – it’s probably the slow song/fast song switch off, the fuzzy wall-of-guitar and root-noted bass sound, or, maybe, lead-singer Jeremy’s thick-rimmed specs. But The Darlings are less a self-conscious Power Pop formula band, and more of a straight-from-the-heart stab at the mantle of primal, four-chord rock ’n’ roll. - Nak Ling / The Eastbound Downers

The Darlings from London are now known as Allo, Darlin' (due to threats of legal action), a moniker for the songwriter Elizabeth Darling. Under the name The Darlings, they released a 3 track single on WeePOP! Records in November 2007, which sold out in a matter of weeks. The Photo EP included "Emily", a "Jolene" for our times, and a bare cover of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long". Music blog Foggy Ruins Of Time says, "The Darlings Photo EP will soothe you, make you laugh, smile and shake you until you’re thoroughly hooked."

Like a substance in my jacket friend
The silhouettes of the government watch every move so think ahead
Theres heavy clouds above my head
And I don't know how
Just how you take me down
I've seen a thing, but don't give a fuck
Its 4 o'clock in the morning
Sun to me is burning up my little trees like buttercups
Its very unproductive fogging up my conscience
And I don't know how
Just how you take me down
I like coffee I like tea
A spot of ink is on my sleeve
Its fucking up my outfit
Sometimes you are all I see
My sleepless nights and your company is rocking up my dream boat
I feel like I might sink low
And I don't know how
Just how you take me down
Animals look interesting
They like me back or so I think I might be losing my shit
How the hell am I supposed to be like an animal
When all I do is think about my inbox
Theres madness in this construct
And I don't know how
Just how you take me down
You take me down
You take me down
The lyrics of The Darlings' song "Take Me Back" are open to interpretation, but a likely interpretation is that the song is about feeling overwhelmed, lost, and trapped in modern society. The lyrics open with a sense of paranoia as the singer feels watched and scrutinized by the government. They seem to be in hiding or trying to avoid being noticed. The heavy clouds overhead symbolize the weight of society or the pressures that come with living in the modern world.
The second verse touches on the singer's disillusionment with life. They aren't productive and feel like they're just drifting through their days. The ink on their sleeve that "fucks up" their outfit could symbolize the imperfections or stains that people pick up in life. The singer's sleepless nights suggest overwhelming anxiety, possibly a result of feeling like they're not living up to their potential.
The third verse, which discusses animals, provides a glimpse of hopefulness that's quickly shot down. The singer finds solace in nature or the natural world, but they're constantly pulled back to reality by the obligations they have to their inbox or work. The construct they're living in is described as "madness," suggesting a chaotic and stressful environment.
Overall, "Take Me Back" seems to lament the difficulties of modern living and the sense of disconnection that many people feel. The singer wants to find their way back to something simpler, easier, and more pure, but they don't know how.
