In what became known as the band's classic line-up, the band featured Joe Morello (1928–2011) on drums, Eugene Wright (1923-2020) on bass, and Paul Desmond (1924-1977) on saxophone. The band remains best-known for their use of odd time signatures, and were a premier group in the cool jazz movement. They produced several standards, including Take Five and Blue Rondo à la Turk.

Throughout the years, and changing line-ups, the group maintained a strong fan-base among jazz fans of all ages.

Time Out est un album de Dave Brubeck sorti en 1959. L'album se veut, et réussit, une expérimentation de signatures rythmiques inhabituelles dans le jazz !

Blue Rondo a la Turk démarre en 9/8, un rythme inspiré de la danse Zeybek, l'équivalent du Zeimbekiko grec, mais alterne avec des phases en 4/4.

Strange Meadow Lark commence avec un solo de piano rubato, mais adopte un rythme 4/4 swing classique lorsque les autres instruments font leur apparition.

Take Five, tout entier écrit en 5/4, devait à l'origine être, selon Dave Brubeck lui-même, simplement un solo du batteur Joe Morello, mais le succès rencontré en a fait un incontournable standard.

Three to Get Ready commence avec un tempo 3/4, habituel dans la valse, puis alterne deux mesures de 3/4 et deux de 4/4. Ce morceau fut notamment mis en chanson en France par Claude Nougaro en 1962 sous le titre Le Jazz et la Java

Kathy's Waltz (nommé d'après la fille de Brubeck, Cathy, dont le nom a été écorché au passage), commence en 4/4, puis passe en 3/4, avant de mêler les deux types de mesure.

Dans Everybody's Jumpin' le rythme est essentiellement un 6/4 « flexible », tandis que Pick Up Sticks suit un 6/4 clair et marqué.

L'exploration des signatures originales (5/4, 9/8 etc.) sera poursuivie sur certains des albums suivants du quartet, notamment Time Further Out et Time in Outer Space...

When I found this album in my mother's collection as a kid, it opened up a whole new world and changed my life. Now at age 55, I love this more and more. I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Brubeck, tell him what he meant to me and had a picture taken with him ... a cherished memory. Today is the anniversary of his death in 2012, a day before his birthday - this year he would have been 100. Thank you Dave Brubeck !

I also found this in my parents' collection. I don't have many memories from when I was a child but listening to this album is one of them. I can easily conjure up the image of me sitting in that old couch and being confused and enthralled by the music.

I was blessed with the opportunity to see Mr. Brubeck perform with The Cleveland Orchestra. The orchestra, which has some of the very best musicians in the world, stood up to applaud Mr. Brubeck as he walked out onto the stage to show their respect for a musical legend. I have never seen the orchestra do this for anyone else.

It was a superb performance.

I was a sophomore in High School when my older brother played it for me on his car radio, coming up to Kansas from KOMA, Oklahoma. I instantly fell in love with it for a lifetime. Just played it for my 6 year old grandson. He instantly started wiggling to the beat and got up and started dancing!! It's a timeless, ageless, universal classic!!!!

I can think of a great bassist who became a hot dog and I grew wary of his playing because of that. Eugene never became a hot dog. He always anchored the Dave Brubeck Quartet as a true gentleman and accomplished bassist. You are so right to point out, baron0877: Eugene Wright doesn't get enough praise.

When I was still a kid in the late '70's I used to explore the attic of my house. On one expedition I came across a reel-to-reel player with swing-out speaks and a stack of tapes. I plugged the dusty 3M machine into the outlet used for Christmas lights and after some recollection of the video tape machine that was being used in my elementary school I figured out how to run the tape. This album was the first jazz I ever heard. My dad had bought it while in Germany serving in the Army in the '60's. When I recall stuff like that I realize how good a childhood I had. Thank you Dad.

Music is good when it arouses an emotion or a mood within you. it's not necessarily about being melodic, religious or overtly musical, but about carrying the listener somewhere where he was not before. In this case, I feel like sitting on a park bench by a warm evening. the wind gently caresses my face, and everything is silent except for the nature around me. It is interesting that I mention that it evokes the silence when I speak of this kind of music 👀

I used to work at a restaurant as a server when I was 16 and the restaurant had a jazz playlist playing all of the time . I used to always do the trumpet sounds when I was in the back putting in my orders and my coworkers laughed at how I already knew what song came on next And I finally found it! Had this album when it first came out. Probably played it a thousand times. Lost it somewhere along the line. It was an exploration of unusual time signatures such as 9/8. That is why it was groundbreaking. "Take Five" is written in 5/4.

In 1959, at the University of California (Riverside campus (UCR)), we were privileged to have Dave Brubeck & his stellar quartet live on campus (Dave Brubeck, piano; Eugene Wright, bass; Paul Desmond, alto sax; Joe Morello, drums). (Our outstanding Commissioner of Fine Arts, Bob Duncanson, was the key figure in making it happen.) It was a wonderful evening of all-time beautiful (enchanting) music (all the songs heard on this album plus others). We of course visited with them before & after their (unforgettable) performance (not only were they consummate musicians passionate about their work, each of them was a truly approachable, modest, splendid gentleman, of wonderfully warm humor & genuinely engaging disposition). Thank you, R. Jason Malloy, for making this classic album available on YouTube!

I’m not a huge fan of jazz but this is something truly special. It makes me want to get up and groove. Dave Brubeck might open the door for me to discover other great jazz musicians.

@Clint Eastwood Thank you. I 'm a beginner in Jazz music. I' m knew only dixie and the most popular songs. Since a day I begin to listen Bela Bartok, Malher and Bruckner. Then I could understand Jazz. Before that I listened too much clasic composers like Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart.

I think I had more jazz albums by Dave Brubeck than anyone else. I met his daughter Katherine at college and we became close friends. The first jazz album I ever bought was Brubeck from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.

To add to Mr Malloy's intro, many do not know how cutting edge this album was at that time and nothing since then has really been produced. Brubeck revealed in an interview back in 2003 that record producers typically would never allow any jazz artist to make an album of all "original" written material - it was always "required" to cover some other popular song(s). Brubeck said no, because he earned enough street credits to pull it off. The meters, the melodies, the improvisational interplay from a talented tight group is pure aged jazz cognac!

I remember when I heard this album first time I was 17 working at a movie theater cleaning theaters between shows, I instantly loved it because it was only music and no vocals as at the time I was into "techno" music with no singing....its great to work to and every time you hear something new. I also remember as a kid one bit of one of these songs was used in a PAN-AM commercial.

While in school at Auburn University in the late '50's early 60's, a roommate and I drove up to Sewanee The University of the South on a Friday night to see Dave Brubeck in concert. Small auditorium. almost just a large classroom. 65 years later, I still have those memories although many more have left my 82 year old mind. I feel so sorry for the young generation who listen to the NOISE they call music. Thank you Dave, Miles, Stan, JJ and the rest who gave us such great music.

There is a 3-CD "anniversary set" of Brubeck songs, icuding an extended "live" version of Take 5.. The 3rd CD is him talking about his music. One of ther best 30 minutes I ever spent.

Our '60s show band, the Emcees, used Take Five as our break number. Many musicians would come from other venues simply to hear and watch. Not Brubeck but fun to perform.

It is unbelievable, what Joe Morello gives to the band-ah, the drummer- there are unusual rhythms sworming around, and the solo on Take 5/4 is great ,but ,for me as an amateur drummer, it is even more fantastic,when even within a strange rhythm-base, he puts counterpoints or breaks and is within the swing, that is real passion and profession,unbelievable!!
