In what became known as the band's classic line-up, the band featured Joe Morello (1928–2011) on drums, Eugene Wright (1923-2020) on bass, and Paul Desmond (1924-1977) on saxophone. The band remains best-known for their use of odd time signatures, and were a premier group in the cool jazz movement. They produced several standards, including Take Five and Blue Rondo à la Turk.
Throughout the years, and changing line-ups, the group maintained a strong fan-base among jazz fans of all ages.

In the early 70’s, my father and I were watching Johnny Carson, and one of his guests was Buddy Rich. My father noticed how enthralled I was with Buddy’s drum solo and, after the show, my father brought me into the living room, pulled out his copy of this album and mentioned that he was at the concert at Carnegie Hall when it was recorded. He put on Castilian Drums, and cranked the Hi-Fi up. That was all she wrote. The very next day, my father, a Navy captain, got in touch with the drummer for the Naval Academy jazz band, and bought from him a Gretsch bass drum and mounted tom. Those two drums were the center of every drum kit I created around them over the decades, and traveled with me as I toured all over North America. Thank you, Dad. And Joe Morello, too.

my father introduced me to this album when I was a 1 year old baby in 1963. he would put on TAKE FIVE which is on the same album when he wanted me to stop crying and go to sleep. he said the take five tune was the only thing would send me into a rhythm and send me to sleep. I am 57 now and I am totally hooked on the whole album including the brilliant joe Morello drum solo absolutely mesmerizing puts you into a trance.

I'm so glad that the DBQ is still loved and understood by many; time passes, I get bored by so much stale music but theirs remain as fresh and iconic as when it appeared.
