Pennies_from_heaven
The Dave Brubeck Quartet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time it rains, it rains pennies from heaven
Don't you know each cloud contains pennies from heaven?
You'll find your fortune's fallin' all over the town
Be sure that your umbrella is upside down

Trade them for a package of sunshine and flowers
If you want the things you love, you must have showers
So, when you hear it thunder, don't run under a tree
There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me

Every time, every time it rains, it's gonna rain pennies from heaven
Don't you know every cloud contains lots of pennies from heaven
You'll find your fortune's fallin', baby, all over the town
Be sure, be sure that your umbrella is upside down

Trade them for a package of sunshine and flowers
If you want the things you love, you've got to have showers

So, when you hear it thunder, don't run under a tree
There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me

Overall Meaning

The Dave Brubeck Quartet's song "Pennies From Heaven" is a classic jazz tune that speaks about the idea of good things coming out of seemingly bad situations. The lyrics suggest that every time it rains, it brings with it a shower of "pennies from heaven", or small fortunes that can be exchanged for whatever the heart desires, whether it be sunshine or flowers. The song encourages the listener to look beyond the surface of things and see the potential for good in every situation, even those that may seem less than ideal.

The idea of "pennies from heaven" is often used metaphorically to describe unexpected good fortune or small but significant blessings that come out of difficult situations. The song captures this sentiment perfectly with its upbeat tempo and cheerful lyrics, making it a popular choice for jazz and swing dance enthusiasts. The repetition of the phrase "pennies from heaven" throughout the song reinforces this idea of finding positivity in every situation, no matter how challenging it may seem.

In summary, "Pennies From Heaven" is a classic jazz song that encourages listeners to look for the blessings in every situation, even those that may seem difficult or challenging. It reminds us that good things can come out of unexpected places, and that by keeping our hearts and minds open to the possibilities around us, we can find joy and happiness in even the smallest of moments.

the great joe Morello....state of the art

Brubeck hatched a plan to start this number with an impromptu introduction -- leaving his other members completely in the dark.  TERRIFYING THEM.
...And at Carnegie Hall... how could Dave do this to them?
It begged Joe Morello to just join in with the jam.

Then suddenly, Dave busts out "Pennies."

Best of all, Paul plays the "impromptu intro" at the start of his solo.  So, so cool.

Geniales!!!

Ha, that guy saying "Yeahh" in there is too good. Perfect timing. Feeling the groove.

That's Dave haha, he does it throughout the whole concert. My favourite is in Blue Rondo where he does it in time with the beat in a gap in Paul's soloing.

Lovely!
