The Song Is You
The Dave Brubeck Quartet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear music when I look at you,
A beautiful theme of every
Dream I ever knew.
Down deep in my heart I hear it play.
I feel it start, then melt away.

I hear music when I touch your hand,
A beautiful melody
From some enchanted land.
Down deep in my heart, I hear it say,
Is this the day?

I alone have heard this lovely strain,
I alone have heard this glad refrain:
Must it be forever inside of me,
Why can't I let it go,
Why can't I let you know,
Why can't I let you know the song
My heart would sing?

That beautiful rhapsody
Of love and youth and spring,
The music is sweet,

The words are true
The song is you.

Overall Meaning

The Dave Brubeck Quartet's song The Song is You is a romantic ballad that speaks to the power of love and the beauty of its sounds and rhythms. From the very first lines, the song sets a dreamy, introspective tone that speaks to the listener's heart. When the singer looks at their lover, they hear music - a beautiful theme that encompasses every dream they've ever known.

As they touch their lover's hand, they hear a beautiful melody that was born in some enchanted land. The song speaks to the singer's deep love for their partner, and how that love affects them on a fundamental level. The music begins to play in their heart, and they feel it start and melt away inside them.

The third verse speaks to the singer's loneliness - they alone have heard this lovely strain and are burdened with the knowledge of it. They ask themselves why they can't let it go, why they can't share it with their partner, and in doing so, let them know the song that their heart would sing. The singer is aching to open up, to share their deepest feelings with their lover, but is held back by fear and doubt.

Overall, The Song is You is a passionate, heartfelt tribute to the transformative power of love, and how it can inspire us to reach beyond ourselves and connect with others on a deep, emotional level.

One of the first LPs i bought and still have it. My next door neighbor introduced me to Brubeck and many other "modern jazz" types. Heard Brubeck and Desmond live at least three times

After so many years I get to listen to this song again, I thought I wouldn't be able to find it again, since I only remembered David Brubeck and the melody (where I live jazz wasn't popular, and his name was not known)
thank you for uploading this song 😃

Where do you live that jazz isn't popular? Who doesn't love jazz?

I love how Desmond trades off riffs with himself
