The Way You Look Tonight
The Dave Brubeck Quartet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some day, when I'm awfully low,
When the world is cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight.

Yes you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft,
There is nothing for me but to love you,
And the way you look tonight.

With each word your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fear apart
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
It touches my foolish heart.

Lovely, never, ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won't you please arrange it?
Cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight.

Mm, mm, mm, mm,
Just the way you look tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Way You Look Tonight, written by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields, express the feelings of the singer towards their lover. The singer assures their lover that even in their darkest moments, a thought of them is enough to fill them with warmth and glow. The warmth is attributed to the lover's charming smile, soft cheeks, and tenderness, which the singer finds irresistible. Besides, the singer creates a vivid image of the lover's laugh that wrinkles their nose, describing it as touching their foolish heart.

The singer expresses their unconditional love towards their lover, and wishes they never change their breathless charm. The singer, enchanted by the lover's looks, begs them to keep looking the same way because they love them just the way they look tonight. The song is an amazing love-filled, romantic ballad that perfectly captures the essence of love.

Line by Line Meaning

Some day, when I'm awfully low,
One day when I'm feeling down,

When the world is cold,
When life seems joyless,

I will feel a glow just thinking of you
Thinking of you will make me feel a sense of warmth

And the way you look tonight.
Recalling your beautiful appearance will bring me joy.

Yes, you're lovely, with your smile so warm
That beautiful, warm smile of yours is what makes you lovely,

And your cheeks so soft,
Your soft cheeks and their touchability are also part of what makes you lovely,

There is nothing for me but to love you,
There is nothing left for me to feel, except love,

And the way you look tonight.
Especially in relation to how you look this evening.

With each word your tenderness grows,
Each time you speak, your tenderness towards me grows stronger,

Tearing my fear apart
And that strength breaks down any fear or anxiety that I might feel.

And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
When you laugh, it crinkles your nose, and that is one of the many things that I adore about you,

It touches my foolish heart.
That laughter makes my heart feel foolish with happiness.

Lovely, never, ever change.
Please don't ever change your charming personality and appearance, because it is perfect just as it is.

Keep that breathless charm.
Please always maintain your alluring charm that leaves me breathless.

Won't you please arrange it?
Won't you please make it so, my love?

Cause I love you
Because I love you

Just the way you look tonight.
Precisely the way you look this evening.

Mm, mm, mm, mm,

What I find so amazing is how they can take classical phrasing and turn into jazz licks. Paul Desmond is absolutely amazing. He gets nowhere near enough respect for being the excellent saxophonist that he was. And listen to the audience; they're eating it up, and this is at OBERLIN, noted for it's conservatory of music. All they turned out back in those days out was classical artists, and there they were; holding a jazz concert wtih an INTEGRATED combo. Groundbreaking stuff. RIP, DBQ

The melodic invention of Desmond is beautiful.

This is top flight Brubeck, superior to the Take Five date and all of the successive dates. Paul is every bit as original as Bird!

This album was my intro to Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond back in 1953 and I have been a fan ever since.

Jim Grodnik

As fresh and original today as it was 60 years ago.

A Brubeck classic a real lesson in modern jazz, they were so good, and I sat on my bed in the army night after night listening to them, kept me from going mad.

RIP Dave...thanks for all the great jazz.

How gorgeous is this? Desmond has not gotten the recognition he deserves. This was very early and amazing.

Benny Grenimann

Oh my god! this is amazing
