They were, in fact, the second group of the 'British Invasion' after the Beatles to have a chart hit in America with "Glad All Over", a sort of 'signature song' of the band that continues to receive airplay. DC5 sold over 100 million records, appeared the most of any group on the Ed Sullivan Show, and were the pioneers in introducing the concept of music videos, a la MTV, decades before it went into fashion. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 in a ceremony officiated by fan Tom Hanks.

The band, from London, UK, started out as The Dave Clark Quintet in 1957, with Dave Clark on drums, Dave Sanford on lead guitar, Chris Walls on bass, Don Vale on piano (and arranger) and a saxophone player. By 1962, the band had changed its name to The Dave Clark Five and settled on the line-up that continued until the band called it a day in 1970: Dave Clark (drums, vocals; born December 15, 1939), Lenny Davidson (guitar; born May 30, 1944), Rick Huxley (bass; born August 5, 1942; died February 11, 2013), Denis Payton (saxes, harmonica, vocals; born August 11, 1943, died December 17, 2006), Mike Smith (keyboards, vocals; born December 6, 1943, died February 28, 2008).

Between 1964 and 1967, the band had 17 records in the US Billboard Top 40, with 12 Top 40 United Kingdom hits.

The DC5 disbanded in 1970, having placed three singles on the UK chart that year, two of which reached the Top Ten. That same year, Davidson, Huxley and Payton left and Alan Parker and Eric Ford joined on lead guitar and bass; this line-up, renamed "Dave Clark & Friends", lasted until 1973.

I was brought here with with a video from "Billboard" back from 2015, after he said he and his brother were inspired by this song and then it was "enough piano" and then it was a fight about who would play drums.... so sad he passed ...I remember my ex bf saying when Jump came out, I hope they play the shit out of this song and run it into the ground......and boy did they, Jump was constantly on the radio even listening to the same station, it was played on it at least a couple of times every hour or two and it was the heydey for MTV and was constantly shown on there as well...he got his wish....I prefer them with DLR over Sammy...to me it was "Van Hagar" after that even though they enjoyed even more success with him too...

I was born in 2002 and I love 1920s-2000s music blues, rock, heavy, reggae, jazz, swing, rockabilly, pop, etc. People always tell me why I feel so nostalgic about eras and times I never grew up in, well in reality it's because I really did grew up on these eras of music. My dad would show me cassettes of MTV, Top of the pops (Jimmy Savile days included ), Ed Sullivan show and American Bandstand with Dick Clarke (RIP) and Freddy Cannon and I would just sing along as a kid. This doesn't include road trips with my dad, the movies he would show me and the parties. I'm proud to say I lived through these eras in my own way. I also enjoy the music of today since it will allow me to build my own identity of my generation. You folk grew up on some great music and times not gonna lie. I was shopping at our local super store a few months ago. Glad all over started playing on their speakers. At first I thought it was kind of sad that the dc5 had been relegated to this fate. Felt down and sad last year when i had heard Dave had passed on, I remember as a kid way up in Nothern Ontario the English Lads had these comics of sorts about the music and groups and it was Beatles vs Dave Clark 5 way back in the 60zz. But we loved it all. That wave of ever inspiring song and style out of the Islands was some of the best of times ever in Music. First band I ever saw live. I was seven years old and it was around the summer of 65. It blew me away. Really great tunes.

@Mattie Mclean What in the world seems to be BS about seeing my first concert at 7 yrs old? My dad took my brother and myself. I have no reason to post a fabricated response to impress people I don’t know like yourself. Many parents take their little kids to concerts. Anyway, this is the strangest response I’ve ever had on social media! I’m not sure what your point was.

Love the bands from the 1960s but Dave Clark Five still out rock all of them with their hard-driving beat. Much better looking that the Beatles or the Stones, too. Their sound was truly unique and I still listen to it all the time. So much better than any music today. And Dave Clark, without a high school education, had smarts enough back in the early 1960s to retain all the rights to all of their songs so no one but him owns their song book. They had the first airplane for touring of the rock bands. He even bought the rights and all the tapes/films to a live weekly British rock and roll show called "Top of the Pops", which started Jan. 1, 1964 and ran for 38 years, when it went off the air.. Those tapes contain the only live recordings of all of the big rock bands and stars from America and Britain who performed on that show, a real treasure trove.

I was born in 76 and found this band in the 90's and be hooked ever since. These guys rock and are one of my favs from the 60's with The Who, The Beatles, and Mott and the Hoopie

Lenny Davidson deserves some credit too. Him and Mike were in a group together before joining Clark.

But you are correct, Mike Smith was the greatest talent in the group. I once got into an online argument with someone on Facebook because I posted the FACT that Mike Smith was a better keyboardist than Paul McCartney. The person's rebuttal was that Paul was a better song writer and had many more hits than Mike Smith. I kept telling her that I agreed with that BUT Mike was clearly the better keyboardist, pointing out that Paul was self taught and his keyboard playing was very simple whereas Mike was a child prodigy, entering into one of the top music schools at the age of 13 and could play many of the most sophisticated piano tunes ever written. I was lucky enough to see him live twice before his accident. And I heard him play some classical music in between some of his songs.

I agree. There were lots of keyboard players at the time better than McCartney. And if you take McCartneys work with the Beatles out of the equation, there were a heck of a lot more talented song writers as well. A controversial point which few people will agree with, but in my view NONE of the Beatles as musicians particularly wow me as solo artists or in other bands (although I do love the Wilbury’s). The Beatles were far greater than the sum of their parts. Love the DC5 though.

Grillo, re: songwriting -- the Beatles had this other guy, named Lennon. According to some research, he was the primary songwriter for about 40% of their songs.

One of their best is this happy and rythmic song which is so good to hear 55 years later. Just as Elvis had done earlier they dance whilst singing the song and playing their instruments.

Dave Clark had a couple of great songs, but the Beatles were consistently great. It reminds me of a speed horse who challenges a champion racehorse and ends up exhausted from trying. The Beatles had 20 number 1's in the US. Most bands were lucky to produce one or a handful.

I'm 43 and I heard this when I was like 10. Always thought it was the Beatles because of the sound the song had. Looked it up today and was surprised it wasn't the Beatles lol. Excellent tune

The only sad thing is the lead singer, Mike Smith, died before they were inducted. It took way too long to put them in the Hall of Fame, but they finally got in.
