Loved this. I must’ve been recommended this because I follow Cracking the Cryptic and I know Simon has solved some of your puzzles before.

I hope you do more of these - the on screen editing of the clue solving was excellent as was the puzzle. I’d love to see this as a new variant in regular papers with the clues set around a person like you’ve done with Tony here.

I actually looked for this after Simon mentioned it on Cracking the Cryptic. Simon (and sometimes Mark) solve cryptic crosswords on Fridays on their channel, explaining as they go. I find the wordplay fascinating - though very elusive.

Never in the field of YouTube videos with such little conflict,
have two people struggled for so much,

fighting with clues in all the little niches.

My dad always adored cryptic crosswords and would regularly teach me the ins and outs of ‘crossword lingo’ despite me never achieving his sheer brilliance at solving them. Yet with that and the childhood passion for language my amazing mum instilled in me may have created a verbose yet introverted young lad who to this day loves Mother Tongue with all the fiery passion of a Jane Austen corset buster with a bit of fetishism thrown in for good measure. Thus I have just sat for nigh on 45 minutes enraptured by this video and my own somewhat lacklustre attempts to solve it and, no doubt like Dave and Tony, was enthralled by every moment from the occasionally ‘simple clue’ to the far more frequent brain bursting enigmas that, when discussed, analysed and broken down in detail, left me exasperated and in awe of the genius required to create such a crossword let alone solve it. I now have an insatiable urge to look online for more and try and solve a few myself not to mention make another cup of tea to replace the pathetic looking mug of tepid piss that has replaced my once steaming cup of morning joy after being sidelined in favour of two men playing around with words …

So, in the words of the legendary Tom O’Connor … “If there’s a crossword in your house make sure it’s written and not spoken”

This was superb! Nice one chaps - I enjoyed that and seeing the rapport between the two of you. I've been doing Cryptics for a couple of years now and just about managed to get them all without help - apart from Polka where I was stuck with Conga/Samba/Rumba/Salsa. Not sure we ever saw the clue for BALLOON.

In Scotland they have a modern word for the archaic "without". It's "outwith". It confused the hell out of me when i moved here.

That's the definition used to justify essentially as a middle letter selector? The middle letter is inner, but I can't see how it's distinctive.
