Go On Home British Soldiers
The Davitts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Go on home British soldiers, go on home
Have you got no bloody homes of your own
For 800 years we've fought you without fear
And we'll fight you for 800 more

If you stay British soldiers, if you stay
You'll never ever beat the IRA
For the 14 men in Derry
Are the last that you will bury
So take a tip, and leave us bloody be

So go on home British Soldiers, go on home
Have you got no Bloody homes of your own
For 800 years we've fought you without fear
And we will fight you for 800 more

We're not British, we're not Saxon, we're not English
We're Irish and proud we are to be
So check your Union Jack, we want our country back
We want to see old Ireland free once more

So go on home British soldiers, go on home
Have you got no bloody homes of your own
For 800 years we've fought you without fear
And we will fight you for 800 more

We'll fight them British soldiers for the cause
We'll never bow to soldiers because
Troughout our history, we were born to be free
So get out British soldiers leave us be

So go on home British soldiers, go on home
Have you got no bloody homes of your own
For 800 years we've fought you without fear
And we will fight you for 800 more

Go on home British soldiers, go on home
Have you got no bloody homes of your own

For 800 years we've fought you without fear
And we will fight you for 800 more

Overall Meaning

The Davitts's song Go On Home British Soldiers is a powerful anti-British anthem that calls for the soldiers to leave Ireland and go back to their own homes. The lyrics express a deep resentment among the Irish towards the British, who have interfered in Irish affairs for centuries. The song draws inspiration from the long history of the Irish struggle for independence and social justice, and the perceived oppression of the British rule. The lyrics are a clear message to the British soldiers to leave Ireland and allow the Irish people to govern their own country.

The first stanza of the song calls out the British soldiers, asking them to go back to their own homes. The second stanza draws attention to the continuing Irish struggle against the British rule, pointing out that the soldiers will never defeat the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The song references the Bloody Sunday massacre in Derry in 1972 when 14 unarmed civilians were killed by the British army, condemning the British for their violence against the Irish people. The third stanza highlights the pride of the Irish people in their heritage and their desire to see a free and independent Ireland. The final stanza reiterates the call for the British soldiers to leave and expresses the determination of the Irish people to fight for their cause.

It would be fun if this Irish song "Go On Home British Soldiers" was sung by an Irish singer on the talent show "Britain's Got Talent".

Apart from 'b****' it's nice to hear a version of this song with no swear words - the words f** and b***** were used instead of 'TAKE your Union Jack' and 'British SOLDIERS leave us be' in the version sung by Eire Og.

Guiding Passion

Bet a lot of europeans would sing a different version of this song now. Probably more along the lines of "Go on home Muslim Arabs go on home, have you got no F#&$@* homes of your own? For 1400 years we've fought you without fear, and will fight you for 1400 more."
