Evicted
The Dear Hunter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have been evicted
From a soul constricted
By the flameless fire
Can we all just go cold?

If you need a little cash you sell yourself
To everything
A dollar in exchange for failing hearts
So loudly say.

Oh, how I surely know that frame of mind
Sleeping softly curbside
Comfortably abroad on a stolen ticket
None of this will last
All of this will pass
When bed sheets are broken glass
I know your hearts will skip a beat in empathy.

If you need a little cash you sell yourself
To everything
A dollar in exchange for failing hearts
So loudly say.

Oh, how I surely know that frame of mind
Sleeping softly curbside
Comfortably abroad on a stolen ticket
None of this will last
All of this will pass
When bed sheets are broken glass
I know your hearts will skip a beat in empathy.

It's just that easy pick yourself up and go give the world a great big smile
Hey, hey, kid, hey, kid, get a job
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, kid, get a job
Wash that mouth out, ditch those morals, sleep your way right to, right to the top

Hey, hey, kid, hey, kid get a job
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, kid, get a job.

Overall Meaning

The Dear Hunter’s song “Evicted” speaks to the pressures of society and the American Dream. The singer suffers from a soul that is constrained by a “flameless fire,” and has been “evicted” from it. This metaphor suggests that the person has lost their motivation, drive, and passion – they may have been “evicted” from their own body and mind.

The lyrics suggest a sense of hopelessness and despair that many people experience. Life seems to be a constant struggle, filled with difficulties and roadblocks. The singer feels as though selling oneself for money is the only way to survive. The repetition of the line “if you need a little cash you sell yourself” provides a sense of desperation and despair.

The final part of the song oozes with irony as the singer offers a solution to the listener's problems: “pick yourself up and go give the world a great big smile…get a job…wash that mouth out, ditch those morals, sleep your way right to, right to the top…” The singer offers the very things that had seemed to be crushing them underfoot: capitalist ambition and lack of principles.

Overall, “Evicted” is a commentary on the pressure to succeed in the United States and the doubt that this process can create. The singer has succumbed to the harsh reality of capitalist America and lost touch with their inner self.

I just got into this band on a whim about a week ago and this is my so far favorite. Haven't given it a high listen but this is gold. I was totally shocked at only 5k views, I literally expected these guys to be one of those million view kind of acts by now. Guess I'm just so hipster.

@danielcorcoran1441

Me too. They literally deserve it.

@popcorny8931

Are you still one?

@thatonethief

It is so weird that Coheed and Cambria and The Dear Hunter have come together to tour. I have listened to these guys for so long and Coheed for so long. Both amazing bands! I am seeing them in Missouri, my home state! A dream come true haha! Smiling Swine is my favorite song though :P

@June99th

I'm a sucker for odd time signatures

@moosh3353

It's only 5/4, not that uncommon. It does make a really neat sound though
