Most of the band's albums, starting with their 2006 debut album Act I: The Lake South, the River North, are concept albums and a part of a common storyline, planned to conclude with a sixth album. The most recent addition is 2016's Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional. Additionally, they have released albums unrelated to the Acts; The Color Spectrum in 2011, Migrant in 2013, and the EP All Is As All Should Be in 2017.
The band began as a side project of Casey Crescenzo when he was a full-time member of The Receiving End of Sirens. The Dear Hunter was originally intended as a vehicle for music Crescenzo had written that didn't fit with the sound of The Receiving End of Sirens. In the winter of 2005 Casey recorded the Dear Ms. Leading demos. He created 10 copies on burned CDs that were circulated amongst his friends and posted online for download. While elements and characters featured on the demos would reappear on the subsequent Acts, Crescenzo has confirmed that there was a transformation in how he represented these themes and persons; while the story had its origins in his personal life, the Acts removed most autobiographical elements in favor of fiction.
Go Get Your Gun
The Dear Hunter Lyrics

Get your gun
And lets find out what it does
Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
We have been (warring?)
And If we win
And if the morning light sets in
We've cheated fate again
And to those who die
Please try to understand
That for those who die
We tried the best we can
With our one foot in the grave
While the other one's kickin' its way
Right down to hell
Go get your gun
Get your gun
Imposing penance one by one
You've got a virtue in a vice
It forces fate (your taking lives?)
With all the history to guide
You've got a passion in those eyes
So aim it straight and true
And to those who'll die
Please try to understand
That for those who die
We've tried the best we can
With our one foot in the grave
While the other one's kickin' its way
Right down to hell
Now,
When this is over
Then,
We'll raise a glass
Straight up to the sun
With our one foot in the grave
While the other one's kickin' its way
Right down to hell
Go get your gun
Get your gun
And lets find out what it does
Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
We have been (warring?)
And if we win
And if the morning light sets in
We've cheated fate again
And to those who die
Please try to understand
That for those who die
We tried the best we can
With our one foot in the grave
While the other one's kickin' its way
Right down to hell
The Dear Hunter's song "Go Get Your Gun" appears to be about war, and the use of violence and weaponry. The opening lines of "Go get your gun/Get your gun/And let's find out what it does/Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot" appear to suggest that the song is at least partially about the excitement of using a weapon, and the power it gives the user. The lyrics also suggest that war and violence are inevitable aspects of human nature, with lines such as "We have been (warring?)" and "shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot".
However, the song also acknowledges the tragic nature of war and violence, with lines such as "And to those who die/Please try to understand/That for those who die/We tried the best we can/With our one foot in the grave/While the other one's kicking its way/Right down to hell". This suggests that the singer is aware of the danger and potentially fatal consequences of using a gun or engaging in warfare, and is not taking it lightly.
Overall, "Go Get Your Gun" is a complex and thought-provoking song that explores the themes of violence, warfare, and mortality in a nuanced way. It acknowledges the excitement and power of using a weapon, while also acknowledging the tragic consequences that can result from their use.
