Most of the band's albums, starting with their 2006 debut album Act I: The Lake South, the River North, are concept albums and a part of a common storyline, planned to conclude with a sixth album. The most recent addition is 2016's Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional. Additionally, they have released albums unrelated to the Acts; The Color Spectrum in 2011, Migrant in 2013, and the EP All Is As All Should Be in 2017.
The band began as a side project of Casey Crescenzo when he was a full-time member of The Receiving End of Sirens. The Dear Hunter was originally intended as a vehicle for music Crescenzo had written that didn't fit with the sound of The Receiving End of Sirens. In the winter of 2005 Casey recorded the Dear Ms. Leading demos. He created 10 copies on burned CDs that were circulated amongst his friends and posted online for download. While elements and characters featured on the demos would reappear on the subsequent Acts, Crescenzo has confirmed that there was a transformation in how he represented these themes and persons; while the story had its origins in his personal life, the Acts removed most autobiographical elements in favor of fiction.

And Iβll admit, you had me too
But youβre awfully chic to act so clean
I can sense a shake
An oscillation in your voice
The closetβs full
But the doorβs swinging open
That you couldnβt suffer the blame
βCause now itβs the only way that you could find a fix to mend
Itβs the art of deceit
With elegance youβd plea to captivate
But never was there doubt
And I heard the sirens sound
As you were standing still in a silent calm
With curtains drawn
Cursing at the light
Shame
That you couldnβt suffer the blame
βCause now itβs the only way that you could find a fix to mend this
Shame
That you wouldnβt suffer the blame
You know itβs the only way that you could find a fix to mend these lies
Youβre not leaving anything back in this world for us
So donβt go taking anything back from this world but
Shame
That you couldnβt suffer the blame
βCause now itβs the only way that you could find a fix to mend these lies
The Dear Hunter's song "Shame" is a poignant and introspective piece that delves deep into the concept of deception and guilt. The lyrics begin with the acknowledgement that the subject of the song had the singer, and seemingly many others, fooled for a time. However, an underlying tension and sense of unease is present in the melody and tone of the song, hinting at a deeper truth to be revealed.
As the song continues, the singer reflects on the deceptive nature of the subject's actions, describing their "elegance" in pleading for forgiveness and attention. However, despite the outward appearance of grace and sophistication, the subject is ultimately brought to heel by their own lies and deceit, revealed by the "sirens sound" and their own inner turmoil as they are "cursing at the light."
The repeated refrain of "shame" serves to highlight the sense of guilt and regret that permeates the song, both for the subject and the singer themselves. The closing lines are particularly poignant, as the singer implores the subject not to take anything back from the world with them when they leave, emphasizing the harm done by their deceptive actions.
Overall, "Shame" is a deeply introspective and emotional song that grapples with themes of guilt, regret, and the destructive nature of deceit.

You had them fooled,
And I'll admit you had me too,
But you're awfully chique,
To act so clean, I...
Can sense a shake,
An oscillation
Your voice,
The closet's full,
But the door's swinging open,
Shame.
That you couldn't suffer the blame,
Cause now it's the only way
That you could find the fix, to mend.
It's the art of deceit,
With elegance you plead,
And captivate,
And never was there doubt in my eye.
With the silent sound,
I see you were standing still in a silent calm,
With curtains drawn,
Cursing at the light,
Shame.
That you couldn't suffer the blame,
Cause now it's the only way,
That you could find the fix, to mend.
Shame.
That wouldn't suffer the blame
You know it's the only way
That you could find the fix to
Mend these lies.
You now leaving anything back in this world for us
So don't go taking anything back from this world but,
That you couldn't suffer the blame
Cause now it's the only way
That you could find the fix to mend.
These lies.

Whoa, it sounds like he's talking about gaslighting, used as a defense mechanism to divert the blame from the self.
Particularly these lines:
"It's the art of deceit,
With elegance you plead,
And captivate,
And never was there doubt in my eye.
With the silent sound,
I see you were standing still in a silent calm,
With curtains drawn,
Cursing at the light"
