Most of the band's albums, starting with their 2006 debut album Act I: The Lake South, the River North, are concept albums and a part of a common storyline, planned to conclude with a sixth album. The most recent addition is 2016's Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional. Additionally, they have released albums unrelated to the Acts; The Color Spectrum in 2011, Migrant in 2013, and the EP All Is As All Should Be in 2017.
The band began as a side project of Casey Crescenzo when he was a full-time member of The Receiving End of Sirens. The Dear Hunter was originally intended as a vehicle for music Crescenzo had written that didn't fit with the sound of The Receiving End of Sirens. In the winter of 2005 Casey recorded the Dear Ms. Leading demos. He created 10 copies on burned CDs that were circulated amongst his friends and posted online for download. While elements and characters featured on the demos would reappear on the subsequent Acts, Crescenzo has confirmed that there was a transformation in how he represented these themes and persons; while the story had its origins in his personal life, the Acts removed most autobiographical elements in favor of fiction.
Whisper
The Dear Hunter Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of moments far too troubling to recall
All the settings and the scenes that signaled suffering impassioned pleas that ended in a whisper
And all the lessons learned
Were they worth the ash from all the bridges burned?
Standing, stomping in the damage and the ruins of a slip of tongue with tragic consequences
On the greatest intentions that weāre too stubborn to let go!
And with this little time before I go
Iāll open up my mouth and scream it out to cast my voice into the crowd
Now that youāre alone
Is it really so impossible to know?
All the actions and reactions pinned against each other never really end just how you wanted
But I think that weāve all made our gravest mistakes
On the greatest intentions that weāre too stubborn to let go!
And with this little time before I go
Iāll open up my mouth and scream it out to cast my voice into the crowd
And I know that all of this will come and go
So, open up your month and scream it out to cast your voice into the crowd
(Donāt let the world, donāt let the world beat you down
And donāt let the world, donāt let the world beat you down)
So, open up your month and scream it out to cast your voice into the crowd
(Donāt let the world, donāt let the world beat you down)
So, open up your month and scream it out to cast your voice into the crowd
(Donāt let the world, donāt let the world beat you down)
So, open up your month and scream it out to cast your voice into the crowd
The lyrics of The Dear Hunter's "Whisper" portray the regret and consequences of past mistakes, and the desire to move forward and make the most of the time left. The song talks about the shadows of the past that haunt us, the bridges we've burnt, and the lessons we've learned from them. Despite our best intentions, we tend to hold on to the mistakes and the pain, making it difficult to move on and live our lives fully. The chorus urges the listeners to scream out and let their voice be heard, to rise above the world that beats them down and make the most of their time.
The words "All the settings and the scenes that signaled suffering impassioned pleas that ended in a whisper" describe the moments of pain and suffering that we tend to bottle up and never talk about. "Standing, stomping in the damage and the ruins of a slip of tongue with tragic consequences" talks about the irreversible actions that we regret and wish we could take back. Despite all this, the lyrics offer hope in the form of the chorus, urging the listeners to scream out and take control of their lives.
Overall, "Whisper" is a powerful and emotional song that urges us to let go of the past and make the most of our time, to rise up above the struggles and pain, and to let our voices be heard.
