Overall Meaning

The Devil's song "Barbarellas" is a nostalgic tribute to a place called Barbarellas. The repeated use of the name is a nod to the significance of the location to the band members or perhaps to the wild times they had there. The lyrics suggest that Barbarellas was a place of belonging and hope for the band. They even named their first group after the location and got to play on stage there. There is a sense of loss and longing for the place in the lyrics as it is now just a car park.

The lyrics also indicate that Barbarellas holds a special significance in the lives of the band members beyond just being a performance venue. It is where they met and fell in love, and where they feel they shut down as individuals. The repetition of the name in the chorus is almost like a call to action, with the band asking if the listener wants to go to Barbarellas with them.

Overall, the lyrics to "Barbarellas" speak to the importance of shared experiences and the significance of certain places in our lives.

I love this song and the entire album

Much of the rest of the album is darker and more dance oriented, but equally worthwhile. If you are a fan, you are missing an important and revealing part of Duran Duran's history if you don't have this as well as the Andy Wickett demos!

Welcome to one example of what Duran Duran might well have sounded like had Stephen Duffy stayed as lead singer, instead of leaving (to be replaced by Andy Wickett and finally Simon LeBon). A beautiful, sublime, nostalgic song that is the highlight of the overlooked gem that is 2002's Dark Circles, the Devils' (Nick Rhodes and Duffy) only album (in which they revisit the songs they wrote together at the dawn of Duran Duran (1978).

I love the song! Who sings?

errbt

It's Stephen Duffy, the original lead singer of Duran Duran, later to gain fame as Tin Tin with the song Kiss Me (with your mouth...) and then become a critical darling for his work with his group The Lilac Time and solo releases. This album is his and Nick's return to the songs and sounds of that earliest incarnation of Duran Duran, when it had been just him on bass and vocals, Nick Rhodes on keyboards and rhythm box, and Nigel (John) Taylor on guitar.
