Overall Meaning

In the first verse of the song “Gold”, Marina talks about how someone is holding onto something that is gradually slipping away from their grasp. She likens the situation to sand slipping from one’s hand. The person in question is misunderstood and Marina seems to be the only person who truly understands them. Marina’s character seems to have fallen for this person in question and says that it doesn't matter who they are as long as she can be their star.

Marina uses the symbolism of gold to describe how important something is to her. She sings that she knows that she needs gold but the thing she really loves about the person cannot be bought or sold. Marina is saying that she values the love or rather the person more than anything she can get from them or any material things they can provide.

In the last verse of the song “Gold”, Marina emphasizes the importance of freedom. She says that there is no moral to the story she is trying to tell, but she can hear her freedom calling her out. She doesn’t care that everyone knows that she’s a millionaire in debt or that she doesn’t want the gold from the person she’s in love with. She just wants to be free.

This song is clearly about her career and how people were forcing her to make "generic" music to be recognized as a mainstream artist. On an interview she said that this album, FROOT, was written by herself and that she finally did, on this album, the music she always wanted to do, without trying to make a popular song for the radio. So I take this song as that. She doesn't want to get as much money as a popular artist. She only wants to do her thing. "I know that I need the gold, but what I love can't be bought or sold".

I don't get why everyone hates this one. It's calming, it's fun, and it's light. And I think it's a nice contrast to the rest of the album and her entire career in general. It's very different, very bold. It's my second favorite off the album.

Marina has never done something like this, i wasn't expecting such a song at all!
at first listen i didn't like it that much, but it's slowly growing on me. it has a very calm and relaxing melody, and the lyrics are, once again, an introspective look on Marina's new way of seeing the world and what she wants in life. but this time she's handling the change a bit differently, by simply realizing it and accepting it (different from the way the sings about change in 'Happy', 'Froot' and 'Forget'). she seems very at peace with this new perspective she acquired.
i think in the past she could've never written such a song, because she had too much anger and sadness in her heart and soul to ever write such a calm melody over lyrics that talk about such a theme. like i said before, i'm really surprised of this song, but i like it!

alx64uchiha yeah i read that! she was upset and that was probably, like you said, a turning point for her. but my point is, even though she was angry while writing the song, i didn't get an angry or sad feel from it while listening to it. i guess she dealt with this problem and this change in a different and more... mature way, if you will. she was upset, but she didn't make it an angry song; she took her anger, thought about it, made conclusions, and changed. all the while writing this song. at least, that's the way i see it. and it's so rewarding, as a fan, to see her evolve and grow. she's a true gem.

to add to that, if you really listen to the lyrics, you can feel the pain Electra Heart caused her. The people she worked with, the expectations, the money. Everything that's wrong with the music industry. She didn't want to be a part of that. Which is what FROOT represents, her breaking free and being her own artist, her own person. No wonder she's so proud of this song, it is so honest it's almost overwhelming.

alx64uchiha exactly! you said it right, it's the feeling i got from it too. it's telling that she wrote the song while touring with Coldplay, the first leg of the Lonely Hearts Club Tour, where she just entered the proper mainstream scene with 'Primadonna' and everything started to drastically change for her. she just wanted to have an electropop sound and tell the story of a fictional character (and, i guess, make more money and become more famous), but she soon realized that, unfortunately, if you enter that world, it comes with so much negative aspects of the music industry (plus everybody thought she sold out), that she never actually wanted. she's a different spirit, and she started distancing herself from it from the beginning. it must've been so stressful and painful for her to go through the initial and middle part of the EH era, no wonder she's said in many interviews of this era that she never wants to do something like that ever again. but she learned so many things, and grew so much as an artist and a person because of this experience, so i guess all that negativity transformed into so, so much positivity. and, like you said, that's why FROOT is such an amazing album and an important milestone in her life and career.

***** completely agree, I'm glad to see a fan who gets it :) She's my favourite artist for so many reasons, but one of them is because she's honest in her music, and this album is overflowing with honesty. It's truly so rare, especially in the "pop" dimension. And she can do that while coming up with killer tunes and looking amazing as well. I mean common, truly she's too good for the common pop listeners. She doesn't need another Electra Heart, it's purely Marina from now on!

In general, FROOT is very cosmic. From what i've heard so far (I haven't listened to the leaks) every song seems to feel sort of celestial in a different way. Very creative use of electronic sounds, every song is sweet and truly are their own individual FROOT. As a basket, it's delicious.

This is such an underrated song! It has such an amazing message that I think most people have overlooked. I think in the beginning Marina sold out and created music that was meant to be popular and desired money and position but this song shows her maturation! You should realise that Marina wrote TFJ and EH in depression. This is a new happier Marina, which means if you don't like it, it probably means that you are a sad person yourself. TBH, I love all of her albums, but I don't understand why this one gets so much comments about this being unemotional. It's just happier, and if you only listen to sorrow music, then you probably are a person like that yourself. Break the wall in your mind that this is unemotional, and you will understand that this isn't worse than any other album by Marina.

I'm in love with Froot. I see so many people in the comments complaining about this album but I think it's just Marina showing her versatility again. People who loved TFJ disliked EH and now EH fans are disliking this album. Idgi though. I appreciate Marinas artistry. She makes great music. I honestly love how different the album FROOT is. People are upset about it being different than any previous works, but it is what she has wanted for a really long time. I'm so proud of you Marina and The Diamonds and cannot wait until March 16th and your tour this year! Every song grows on me more and more and it may be magic, but it's just how talented you are! Judging by all of the comments about the album, people just don't like change. In my opinion, FROOT is a fantastic album and no the songs do not all sound the same as most people have been saying. Yes the songs may sound similar, but in order to have a good album there is usually some sort of almost "theme" you could say. TFJ had a sort of theme and EH definitely did. I think this is a wonderful album. Keep up the good work, Marina!!!

I love this!! Usually Marina makes songs that are pretty abrupt, but this is just so calm and relaxing. She's always had it in her, her voice has a unique soothing ability. I'm so proud of her, Froot is special and spectacular. The only thing I would change about this particular song is that her voice seems to be covered up some by the music. That's all. :)

I adore this song so much! I read that Marina wrote this song in Germany, not to far from where I live. When I was listening to it and read it, I somehow felt a deeper connection to it as a whole. I know it sounds strange, but to me that was a lovely moment. I listen to it a lot, still and it always sets me in a special mood.

I think people don't realize Marina creates an album that's supposed to be heard live I have seen here once before in Toronto and I realized she creates music to perform not listen only on your iPod hoping for exact lyrics and music tempo to match your mood all the songs have grown on me and I love them all.

This is the best for me, the lyrics are very personal for me because when this song came out I was having a lot of difficulty in my work and feeling used/ignored in relation to my art. I would literally cry while listening to it lol

This sound surprises me after hearing the other songs released so far, but now that I think about it this sound is pretty perfect for an album called froot with the tropical undertones. Not sure how I feel about it but it's growing on me after a few listens.

I don't know why so many people are saying they don't like the album or are gonna pass on it. I'll be honest, at first some of the songs I wasn't sure if I liked. But they've really grown on me and I love them all. For people saying she's changing her style, she's not. Marina is finding herself, and who she is as an artist. In this album you get to really see who she is, she wrote the whole album by herself, which is incredibly amazing. I feel bad for her because she's said she kinda of regrets doing EH, because pop songs aren't who she is. Either way I love Marina, and her lyrics are what really get me in her songs. She's so creative and has this different kind of "Flare" to the music she writes. Personally I love her just being her.

Okay honestly with every new song she releases, I get like really anxious because it's hard for me to listen through a whole new song. I can't sing along or anything,and all the while I'm hoping it will be awesome. So far I am falling in love with this new era and am kind of disappointed in those who wish it would sound more like Electra Heart. She can't be Electra Heart foreverrrr you guys..
