Gold
The Diamonds Marina Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's slipping through your fingers like sand
'Cause they don't understand who you are
Doesn't matter as long as I am your star, star
Yeah, I know that I need the gold
But what I love can't be bought or sold
Don't think I need what I used to need
Don't think I want what I used to want
Don't think I see what I used to see
I've been waiting, waiting for the penny to drop
I've been working, working to get back what I lost, I lost
But whatever happens, I'll be okay
'Cause fortune's running out of my veins, my veins
You can't take away the Midas' touch
So you better make a way for a Greek gold rush
Don't think I want what I used to want
Don't think I need what I used to need
Don't think I want what I used to want
Don't think I see what I used to see
In El Dorado, your gold
To Colorado can't be bought or sold
Now, there's no moral to this story
But I can hear my freedom calling me, calling me
I don't care that everybody knows
I'm a million dollars in the hole
I don't care that everybody knows
Baby, I don't even want your gold
From El Dorado, your gold
To Colorado can't be bought or sold
Gold rush
Gold rush
Free, free, free, free, free, I am free
In the first verse of the song “Gold”, Marina talks about how someone is holding onto something that is gradually slipping away from their grasp. She likens the situation to sand slipping from one’s hand. The person in question is misunderstood and Marina seems to be the only person who truly understands them. Marina’s character seems to have fallen for this person in question and says that it doesn't matter who they are as long as she can be their star.
Marina uses the symbolism of gold to describe how important something is to her. She sings that she knows that she needs gold but the thing she really loves about the person cannot be bought or sold. Marina is saying that she values the love or rather the person more than anything she can get from them or any material things they can provide.
In the last verse of the song “Gold”, Marina emphasizes the importance of freedom. She says that there is no moral to the story she is trying to tell, but she can hear her freedom calling her out. She doesn’t care that everyone knows that she’s a millionaire in debt or that she doesn’t want the gold from the person she’s in love with. She just wants to be free.

I feel like this album is like a fruit basket. All similar in a way but each song has a different tone or effect on you ☺️
S J
lol a FROOT basket :)
moody
That's such a lovely way to describe this album! Spot on.
CianKiejun
Haha, ironic enough, the release day on the countdown on her site has a fruit basket as icon. 🙊
S J
CianKiejun Where is the countdown?
GeorgetheSheep
On the FROOT spin to win, The basket represents FROOT. Then the diamond represents The Family Jewels and the heart represents Electra Heart.
On the spinner, there's also a rainbow, which I'm not sure what that stands for. Maybe it's a hint for the next album?
Daniel García Vega
Everybody seems to hate this song but I think it's pretty good. I find it relaxing and it reminds me of obsessions
Marcos V. Ribeiro
obsessions?
Aymane Mehdi

Daniel García Vega
Marcos V. Ribeiro yeah i don't really know why. maybe cause both songs are kinda slow and calm
