Atlas
The Dip Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You spent the night in the hospital sittin' next to your best friend
Woke up
Three hours later
Just to go downtown
I've known you long enough to see [us on the way you're down]?
Don't put the world on your shoulders
It ain't your load to bear
I asked you how you'd be worse and you muster up a smile
I wish you'd take a minute for yourself once and a while
You got a bigger heart than anyone that I have ever known
That you got to see, it's killing me the way you [care men on]?
Don't put the world on your shoulders
'Cause you know
It ain't your load to bear
Don't put the world on your shoulders
'Cause you know
It ain't your load to bear alone
(Feel the pressure rising)
Feel the pressure building up inside you
Don't know what to do
Don't know what to do
(Feel the pressure rising)
It's too much for one person to hold
What to hold on to?
Ohhhh
Don't put the world on your shoulders
'Cause you know
It ain't your load to bear alone
Don't put the world on your shoulders, baby
Oh, it ain't your load to bear
(Don't put the world on your shoulder)
Don't put the world on your shoulders
(Don't put the world on your shoulder)
Baby 'cause it ain't you load to bear
(Don't put the world on your shoulder)
Don't put the world on your shoulders
(Don't put the world on your shoulder, hey)
(Don't put the world on your shoulder, na na, na na)
(Don't put the world on your shoulder, hey)
The Dip's "Atlas" is a warm and reassuring song that acknowledges the struggles that come with the burden of life. The song opens with a plaintive statement of a friend arriving in the middle of the night, having a tough time after spending time in the hospital with their best friend. The singer expresses their concern and desire for their friend to take care of themselves, even though they have a larger heart and a heavier load to bear than anyone they know. The chorus strongly urges their friend not to put the world on their shoulders, reminding them that they do not have to do everything alone.
The second verse explores the idea of asking for help, which is difficult for many people. The singer wishes that their friend would take a moment to themselves and not always be the person helping others carry their burdens. The bridge emphasizes the overwhelming pressure that can build up and how important it is to have something or someone to hold onto during tough times.
"Atlas" is a song that seeks to uplift and encourage others who may be feeling overwhelmed or alone. It's a reminder that it's okay to rely on others, and that taking care of oneself is just as important as taking care of others.

@ShadamAran
I'm a music education voice major in Mississippi and the blues/soul sound is so deep in my veins now there's no way Id ever be able to get away from it at this point. This sound and vibe is 100% goals. Love this band. If you're into them I can't highly recommend Vulfpeck, saint Paul and the Broken Bones, and Alan Stone enough. I'm so glad this sound is alive and well in this day and age.
@40reb
I agree! Fellow Mississippian! Very Good!

Fellow Music Ed Voice Major here from Virginia Tech! I already fucking love all those bands!! What else do you listen to??
@ct528O
@Harry Rosson I'm no music major but those are some of my favorites too ;) They were on hiatus for a while so they haven't released anything new lately but I'd recommend checking out Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds! Here are a couple of their best, imho: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOjFVuiUJPY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5WVDhJ3dmQ

I love that bands are bringing back this old school feel and tone. I wonder if they use old analog tape equipment in the studio.
@TheDipMusic
we do indeed! No other way to get that sound.
@jasonc1899
@The Dip very cool. Thanks for the reply.
@ViciousTuna2012
@The Dip omg I love you guys! You're my new favorite band to sing along to while I'm driving, and honestly you've helped me to find the courage to sing in front of people. I can't thank you enough.
Can I ask how you get that sound on your vocals live? I don't know what the technical term is, but it's this certain vocal tone that sounds like an older recording. Is it distortion on the mic? Lots of compression? It almost seems like the vocals aren't as clean. I love it though. It gives them more of an "instrument" type quality...if that makes sense.
