Summer Rains
The Ditty Bops Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the ices melt I admit I felt a lifting in my heart
Every land becomes an island
Everywhere a paradise

Oh my it's so divine
There's no more snow at Christmas time
Just summer rains
So I hung my hat scarf and coat
Put on my birthday suit
Even though it's December
It feels like the month of June

When I get up I get up and go surfing with the girls
They are all from California
Finer than an oyster's pearl

Oh what a place to be
I pluck a mango from a tree
As the summer rains are falling from the sky

When the ices mel I began o sing a joyful melody
And Orchestra of ukuleles strumming in the sweetest key

The tail of a wintery ghost is lost in an islando breeze
I'm paddling into the sunset
Leave behind my memories

Oh it's begun what's been done can't be undone
Once summer reigns
I'm dancing with the sea
Water washing over me

As the summer rains are falling from the sky
Summer rains are falling from the sky

Overall Meaning

The Ditty Bops's song Summer Rains is an ode to the changing of seasons, where the melting of ice brings about a sense of renewal and hope. The lyrics describe the transformative nature of this event, where "Every land becomes an island" and "Everywhere a paradise." This is also reflected in the change of weather, where "There's no more snow at Christmas time, just summer rains." The singer embraces this shift by shedding their winter clothes and immersing themselves in the warmth of the season. Even in December, it feels like June. The singer joins a group of surfing girls from California, and with a mango in hand, they soak up the beauty of the summer rains falling from the sky.

The song is a celebration of the joy and freedom that comes from embracing change and new beginnings. The singer sings a "joyful melody" as they envision an orchestra of ukuleles playing alongside them. The end of winter is personified as a "wintery ghost" that is lost in the island breeze, as the singer leaves behind their memories and paddles into the sunset. The lyrical imagery of dancing with the sea and water washing over them emphasizes the idea of being fully immersed in the moment and savoring the beauty of life. Overall, the song encourages listeners to embrace change and find joy in the unexpected.

In 2008, the music store by my house was closing down and trying to get rid of all their cds. I bought so many random albums that day, and the Ditty Bops self titled album was one of them. I didn’t know who they were or what they sounded like, but the cover was so attractive I had to get it. I’ve been in love with them since.
