All Mine
The Divine Comedy Tom Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All the stars may shine bright
All the clouds may be white
But when you smile whoa how I feel so good
That I can hardly wait to hold you
Enfold you; never enough render your heart to me

All mine
You have to be

From that cloud, number nine, danger starts
That sharp incline and such sad regrets
Oh as these starry skies
As they swiftly fall, make no mistake
You shan't escape, tethered and tied
There's nowhere to hide from me

All mine
You have to be

So don't resist
We shall exist
Until the day
Until the day I die

All mine
All you have to be

All mine
Yes, you have to be

Whoa you have to be
All mine

Overall Meaning

The Divine Comedy Tom Jones's song All Mine is full of poignant imagery and complex emotions. The lyrics are a testament to the power of love and the irresistible desire to possess and be possessed. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as they describe a seemingly perfect world where everything is bright and beautiful. However, the true source of happiness lies in the smile of the beloved, and this joy is so overwhelming that it makes the singer yearn to hold and enfold them forever. The use of the word "render" conveys the sense of complete surrender to the passion one feels, and the repetition of the phrase "All mine" reinforces the idea of ownership and exclusivity.

The second verse is darker in tone and contains references to danger, regret, and the inescapable grip of the singer's love. The metaphor of the "cloud, number nine" suggests a state of euphoria or delusion, while the "sharp incline" symbolizes the risk involved in pursuing this intense feeling. The imagery of the starry skies falling creates a sense of inevitability, as if the beloved has no choice but to succumb to the singer's desires. The line "There's nowhere to hide from me" is particularly chilling, as it implies a sense of possession and control that borders on obsession.

The final verse shifts back to a more hopeful tone, emphasizing the strength and endurance of the love between the singer and the beloved. The use of the phrase "don't resist" implies that resistance is futile and that the only way to find peace is to surrender to the love that exists between them. The repetition of "All mine" at the end of the song reinforces the idea of exclusivity and ownership, but also suggests a sense of security and comfort that comes with being possessed by someone who truly loves you.

Wow, Was not aware of this song cover! Portishead is so interesting alone so to have a Tom Jones cover with his power is simply amazing! It is amazing how Tom in his last 20 years is still doing so much musically from Rock, Pop, Gospel, Blues and even Show Tunes! Listen to Andrew Lloyd Weber's "VAULTS OF HEAVEN" Gospel-Tinged from one of his lesser known shows (was it "ASPECTS OF LOVE, I Believe?) and please tell me it is not one of the most powerful and amazing show songs of Weber's catalog! That is the magic of Tom's voice-he can put it into so many formats and it is stunning. This "All Mine" is a real little sonic treasure!
