1. The Dodos are an indie folk band from San Francisco, CA, United States, formed in 2005. Almost all of their albums (except the very first one) are credited to Dodos (without 'The'), but they made their recording début as The Dodos and are listed as such on streaming platforms, which is why most of their scrobbles end up here. The Dodos is the preferred spelling. The band has two core members: Meric Long (vocals, guitar) and Logan Kroeber (drums). They have released eight studio albums since mid-2006: Beware of the Maniacs (2006), Visiter (2008), Time to Die (2009), No Color (2011), Carrier (2013), Individ (2015), Certainty Waves (2018) and Grizzly Peak (2021).
2. Having evolved in late 1979 out of Swansea punk band The Urge, The Dodos were named after the ephedrine-laced asthma tablets, consisting of Dickie Evans (vocals), Phil Roberts (guitar), Anthony Reed (bass) and Steve 'Gagsy' Garland (drums). They contributed a song (1981's 'Blind To Fiction') to a rare compilation called Sex, Violence and the Eternal Truth.
3. The Dodos were a very short-lived British rock band of the late 1960s. They released just one single: 'I Made Up My Mind' b/w 'Can't Make It Out' (Polydor, 1967). Both sides were penned by the band's main songwriter, Alan Hawkshaw.

When I wanted you, how I haunted you, all to myself
One gift, one slip
Where you hiding at, who you're aiming at, won't kiss and tell
Control yourself, I don't want it to, I don't need it to, can someone else?
Counting until, when your heading to, 'cause your attitude, turn on itself
Where you going to, are you going through, heaven or hell?
Won't slip, won't miss
When I'm onto you, send it over to, your faith in will
Control yourself, I don't want it to, I don't need it to, contain itself
Counting until, it was never that, I was aiming at, being someone else
Ha!
You want it all, you want to walk, you want to walk, right through it!
You had it all, you had it all, you had it all, you threw it!
You want it all, you want to walk, you want to walk, right through it!
You had it all, you had it all, you had it all, you threw it!
Black night, blackness
When I wanted you, how I haunted you, all to myself
One kiss, one slip
Where you going to, are you going through, heaven or hell?
Control yourself, I don't want it to, I don't need it to, can someone else
Counting until, when you need it to, cause your attitude, turn on itself
You want it all, you want to walk, you want to walk, right through it!
You had it all, you had it all, you had it all, you threw it!
You want it all, you want to walk, you want to walk, right through it!
You had it all, you had it all, you had it all, you threw it!
The lyrics to The Dodos's song "Black Night" seem to convey a sense of obsession mixed with confusion and desperation within a relationship. The repetition of "black night, blackness" at the beginning sets a dark tone, suggesting the singer is in a state of despair. The repeated phrase "when I wanted you, how I haunted you" suggests the singer is consumed by their desire for the other person, almost to the point of stalking. The line "One gift, one slip, where you hiding at, who you're aiming at, won't kiss and tell" seems to suggest that the singer is aware that their actions may be inappropriate or unwanted, but they cannot help themselves.
The lyrics also suggest a feeling of wanting control over the other person, asking them to "control yourself" and not giving in to the singer's desires. The line "counting until, when your heading to, 'cause your attitude, turn on itself" creates an image of the singer waiting for the other person to break and act on their own desires, almost as if they are testing them.
The repeated lines "you want it all, you want to walk, you want to walk, right through it" and "you had it all, you had it all, you had it all, you threw it" suggest that the relationship may have already ended or is in the process of falling apart. The singer seems resentful that the other person wanted everything but ultimately ended up throwing it away.
