1. The Dodos are an indie folk band from San Francisco, CA, United States, formed in 2005. Almost all of their albums (except the very first one) are credited to Dodos (without 'The'), but they made their recording début as The Dodos and are listed as such on streaming platforms, which is why most of their scrobbles end up here. The Dodos is the preferred spelling. The band has two core members: Meric Long (vocals, guitar) and Logan Kroeber (drums). They have released eight studio albums since mid-2006: Beware of the Maniacs (2006), Visiter (2008), Time to Die (2009), No Color (2011), Carrier (2013), Individ (2015), Certainty Waves (2018) and Grizzly Peak (2021).
2. Having evolved in late 1979 out of Swansea punk band The Urge, The Dodos were named after the ephedrine-laced asthma tablets, consisting of Dickie Evans (vocals), Phil Roberts (guitar), Anthony Reed (bass) and Steve 'Gagsy' Garland (drums). They contributed a song (1981's 'Blind To Fiction') to a rare compilation called Sex, Violence and the Eternal Truth.
3. The Dodos were a very short-lived British rock band of the late 1960s. They released just one single: 'I Made Up My Mind' b/w 'Can't Make It Out' (Polydor, 1967). Both sides were penned by the band's main songwriter, Alan Hawkshaw.
Going Under

Are you the curse? are you the cure?
Sometimes you know you ask too much
Been getting good at giving up
This ship is going under, going under, going under
Cast off, but hit the ocean floor
I see you there upon a bluff
You disappear a tiny dot
This ship is going under, going under, going under
Misplace my heart, misplace my hope
I'm here without it
Contained at home to all the brave
And bold who found it
To know you still, I hold you in, I hope you know, I only begin
I hope you will, doing it once, I know you will, I've only begun
Give all my things, to all my enemy's are grounded
I make amends, I gave it up, I hope you found it
I see you still, I hold you in, I hope you know, I only begin
To all of them, doing it once, I hope you know, I've only begun
Oh
To all the gold, my hands are up, I hide my plunder
Goodbye to everyone I know, were going under
I see you still, I hold you in, I hope you know, I only begin
To all of them, doing it once, I hope you know, I've only begun
Oh
Going Under by The Dodos is a song that questions the reality of a curse or a cure that can take someone by surprise. The lyrics suggest that sometimes we ask too much of ourselves, and we become good at giving up. The ship is a metaphor for life, and it's clear that it is sinking. The line "cast off, but hit the ocean floor" is a reference to the fact that sometimes we try to escape our problems, but we only end up making things worse.
The verse "misplace my heart, misplace my hope" suggests that the singer has lost track of what's important in their life. They feel contained at home while others are brave and bold enough to find what they're looking for. The lines "give all my things, to all my enemy's are grounded" and "goodbye to everyone I know, we're going under" suggest that the singer is ready to let go of their possessions, and their relationships.
However, the chorus suggests that there is still hope. The singer still holds onto the memory of someone they love, and they know they've only just begun. This could suggest that the sinking ship is a metaphor for a new beginning, or that even though life can be tough, it's important to keep pushing forward.
