By July 2002, the two largest rock stations in Chicago; Q101 and 94.7 “The Zone” began to randomly spin the single “Hey Luv” within normal rotation hours. The response by the listeners was so overwhelming that music director James Van Osdol of 94.7 “The Zone” contacted The Dog & Everything and asked them to post a message on their website asking their fans to stop calling in for the song, as they could not handle the volume. Coincidently, the songs “Hey Luv” and “Superglue” were licensed to MTV, and featured on MTV’s hit reality show “The Real World,” and the sitcom “Undressed.” As their Chicago fan base continued to multiply, The Dog & Everything began to tour the Midwest and west coast with acts such as Something Corporate (Drive Thru), Riddlin Kids (Aware) and Lucky Boys Confusion (Electra). The infectious songs and energetic live show immediately caught on in other cities, and before long there were substantial followings in markets such as Omaha, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Madison, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland as well as surrounding areas. By Fall 2002 The Dog & Everything had headlined and sold out such Chicago venues as The House of Blues (1200 capacity), The Vic Theatre (1500 capacity), and the famed Metro (1200 capacity).
In October of 2002 The Dog & Everything entered a contest sponsored by 94.7 “The Zone” called “The Next Big Thing.” After a series of live performances at The Hard Rock Café in Chicago, The Dog & Everything was selected by a panel of industry judges as Chicago’s best unsigned band. This gave the band a great deal of radio promotion, and helped develop a strong relationship with James Van Osdol, the Music Director and the station’s head DJ.
On December 13th, 2002 The Dog & Everything single “Hey Luv” was featured on “94.7 The Zone’s” specialty radio show “The Pillow Fight.” This cage match-type program put two songs up against one another, and then listeners voted for the song they wanted to continue on to face another challenger. “Hey Luv” was put up against a new Sum 41 single, and “Hey Luv” won the listeners’ votes overwhelmingly. The song continued to win night after night, defeating singles from artists such as Good Charlotte, System of a Down, Everclear, Jimmy Eat World, The Used, Transplants, 3 Doors Down, Fuel, Chevelle, and Papa Roach. After 30 days, the song was the first ever retired from the program, smashing the old record of 7 set by New Found Glory.
The month of radio play gained a great deal of recognition for The Dog & Everything. Their Chicago fanbase grew immensely, and individuals within the industry began to take notice. “Hey Luv” appeared on two compilations put out by the promotion mammoth Jeff McClusky and Associates. One of these entitled “The Best of Unsigned Chicago,” and the other, called “The Bridge Sampler” featured only up and coming national acts (The Dog & Everything was the only unsigned band to appear). “The Bridge Sampler” went out to every major reporting rock station in the country, and before long “Hey Luv” began to gain random spins across the country. Labels soon began calling on the band, however they have not yet found the label that they feel they can call home.
By the end of 2003, 8,000 copies of the debut album "Bandshell" had been sold. This July the band releases their sophomore independent album titled “Sound Off”. With the buzz this album is already creating, the next year looks to be big for The Dog and Everything.

The Dog and Everything Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't be writing letters though
Spend month just collecting words
But my deliveries so absurd
I'd say I'm sorry but
It's outdated
You could never see my ego being torn down
You was only tryna inflate it
Out into the stratosphere
Why would I leave when
I got what I need right here (got it all right here)
And it's soldered to my brain
You my main thing in mainframe baby
Tony the Soprano when I sing
Got me acting like a fool
You runnin through my thoughts holding hands with gabaghouls
Why would I leave when I got everything right here (Right here with me)
Take me far from this place we have nothing to fear (But the Stratosphere)
You don't gotta say you're sorry just hold on to me
Feeling like a criminal when you're loving me
Yeah I know, yeah I know you're the best part of everyday
When your words don't come out I still know what you're tryna say
Can't help but smile when I see that face
Hate you but love you it's the only way
Stay for me, for just one night
Talk to me
There's no need to put up a fight
Now I'm boutta blow
Out into the stratosphere
Why would I leave when
I got what I need right here (got it all right here)
And it's soldered to my brain
You my main thing in mainframe baby
Tony the Soprano when I sing
Got me acting like a fool
You runnin through my thoughts holding hands with gabaghouls
Keep to myself cause I've been alone for oh so long
More fragile than delft
You the hand I been dealt
You my mortar da bomb
If you can't have me then nobody can
Swim in moon rivers and drown me in the sand
In this song, The Dog and Everything's lead singer is expressing his feelings towards his partner, who wants him to open up more to her. He explains that he doesn’t write letters as he spends months collecting words to ensure that his delivery is unparalleled. He acknowledges that his ego has been inflated, and he is aware that his partner was trying to build him up. He sings about being ready to take off and go out into the stratosphere, but why would he leave when he has everything he needs right here, with her.
He notes that his partner is the best part of his everyday, and he can read her thoughts, and when words don't come, he still understands what she is trying to say. The singer reveals that he has been alone for a long time, but his partner is his mortar bomb - the one who holds him together. He sings about how his partner has to swim in moon rivers, and no one else can have him. Overall, the lyrics speak about the integral nature of the singer's partner, who he cannot let go of, no matter how challenging things might become in their relationship.

Ah Zac, let me share my insight gained from watching my Airedale improve. You were one of the key trainers who moved us past the toxic aversive ideas some Airedale people aggressively pushed about my dog and Terriers in general... Your methods are better and smarter. What I learned about leave it took a while to realize. You're welcome to practice my style on my Airedale yourself anytime! Yes, ha ha that means you have to visit us!
My method:
Instead of making the Object Of Interest OOI fly away from a dog that already is prone to engaging in predatory drive quickly, try "clamshelling" the OOI. This technique works for a wide variety of OOI. You already do a version of clamshell when you cover an OOI on the ground with your hand. I tell people to clamshell anything the puppy or dog rudely lunges toward (kids seem to like it the most). The OOI that gets covered/enclosed like a clam inside the clamshell tends to just "go away" in a non-energy way that tends to not cause much frustration. The pup will learn impulse control of clamshell is done properly, simply closing off the OOI from the puppy dog without movement in any direction and without sound (just like a clam closing its shell).
The next step for a good leave it would be to reward the puppy in the opposite direction from the clam shell ideally at your feet or by your face. I don't like opening up the clamshell to reward the puppy dog. If I give them the OOI, I feel like the dog brain is going to learn they can/should get whatever they're interested in if they just wait a second. I want to teach them to ignore whatever they find scattered around the world and come to me for their reward instead.
I find using a clicker properly helps speed up learning.
What I've shared was hard-earned. I believe it is a technique you will really like. I think you're already doing clamshell a bit.
Cheers to all your efforts! Thank you for all the knowledge from your books and videos!

It's not about winning or losing an "argument", it's about facts and good information and learning from more experienced people.
I agree that the infighting between trainers is getting a bit boring.
The thing about training dogs is that it's more like an art form than a science. I also don't know why people are always judging trainers by how they handle "red zone" cases as if that means anything. I've been training/rehabbing dogs for 18 years and "red zone" cases are very rare. Many of my clients come to me having paid so called "dog whisperers" thousands of pounds and made no progress or worse, their dogs are now much worse off than before.
Millan is not well regarded in the industry and often cited as an example of how not to "train" dogs.
As 99% of people that come to Zak's channel are not professional trainers, the advice he gives is aimed at owners, highly practical and will serve to improve the relationship between dog and owner by demonstrating how to build a common language. People should then take those skills and discover for themselves what works and doesn't work for them and their dogs.
By controlling the reinforcement the dog receives, we build dogs that realise that paying attention to their owners is the best way to access what they want. This in turn builds a great relationship and positions the owner as the dog's "leader". In the dog's mind, he values the owner because the owner provides all the best things in the dog's life.
Think of it as working for a boss who is always giving you something in return for the work you do rather than punishing you for the work you don't do. I also agree that rewarding behaviours will only get you so far with some dogs and there may come a time when layering in corrections will be needed. One of my own dogs is trained exclusively with rewards and has never needed a correction and he was super aggressive when I rescued him - he now competes at rally obedience and loves his "work" and he's a Jack Russell/Patterdale mix. My other dog (jack Russell mix) has needed some pressure to stop unwanted behaviours, but he was a real mess when I got him.
One thing we can all thank Cesar Millan for however is creating a culture of owner responsibility. Nearly every client I get comes to me saying "I know the problem is me and not my dog". I thank Cesar for that.
All the best and have a great xmas !
@ASMinor
In my opinion, this is a vital skill for any puppy or dog to have. Not only is it for safety (stop them from eating things, or chasing things), but it also helps to build impulse control. And it's so versatile, to help with many different behavioral issues. ❤️❤
@IDoLotsOfThingsyt
I’m learning so much from you. I thought my dog (3month silver lab) was dumb... turns out his trainer (me) was the problem.
@RunaWolf.
Your videos are a real help for me, thank you for making them.I recently adopted a 2 year old dog and I'm having a hard time training her for obvious reasons(she was a stray and she's an adult already) , and I love the positive training you are using and how you explain everything so well. We already conquered many issues and I will keep watching your videos for help. ^^
@patyhernandez2830
Amazing video! It's what I needed to get my beagle to "the next level". She is amazing indoors but the time we get outside it seems she has never took a training session. Loved it! Absolutely one of my favorites!
@elizabethhorton9694
Zak, I have started puppy class with my boxer. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the trainer as I am constantly checking on how YOU teach certain commands and find I like your methods better! Thank you so much for the awesome specific command videos! I sincerely appreciate your approach! I was feeling very frustrated because my puppy was very inconsistent with "leave it", but after watching this video, it was very encouraging to see that I'm expecting too much too soon and that I need to be a little more appropriate with my expectations! :)
@iwonapianko2626
It looks so easy with such a calm puppy. I wish to see „leave it” lesson with more active dog, like mine😁
@Quintos.
Yea my puppy doesn't give 2 shits about "leave it" this video is just ridiculous for crazy active puppy's. We are petrified ours will have a bowel obstruction
@aev6075
@Quintos 1) Take your animal to boring environment, let them explore it and make yourself more interesting that that environment (i.e by moving, randomly jumping around etc). 2) Do some basic obedience training to tell your puppy you are interacting with them now and it is possible for them to get a treat. 3) plant something super interesting and delicious in the environment, but don't allow your puppy to examine it, but rather start practicing leave it. 4) move your puppy slowly away from that boring environment and closer to something more interesting while still paying your puppy for obeying. 5) Revert back to the boring environment when your puppy can't resist the disctractions anymore and move toward the exciting environment when your puppy behaves.
This takes hours and hours during multiple sessions and you will not get the exercise through in a week or possibly even month. The payback is huge because with luck your animal live 15+ years and you don't have to constantly fight them over garbage
Because your puppy is active it means that they can learn huge many things, but it is your responsibility to channel that energy. Active puppy is a fantastic and great thing.

😂😂😂👍🏼
@M7ofATC
I would think maybe try having a work out/play session before training to help get rid of its initial burst of energy
