Don't Wait Up for Me
The Donnas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Boy, I got your number
That doesn't mean I have to call you
Get yourself together
'Cause I don't need you like you want me to

Gotta loosen up
Drain the cup
It's time to tear it up

Well, I got one shot and the night is young
So don't wait up for me
I need another hit before I'm done
So don't wait up for me

Boy, don't try to slow me down
You're not the only one that's on my mind
Got enough to go around
If you can't take it, you'll be left behind

Gotta loosen up
Drain the cup
It's time to tear it up

Well, I got one shot and the night is young
So don't wait up for me
I need another hit before I'm done
So don't wait up for me

There's no telling where I'm gonna show up
Nobody knows how the night will end
There's no telling when I'm gonna wake up
Well, when I do, I'll do it all again, yeah

Gotta loosen up
(Loosen up)
Drain the cup
(Drain the cup)
It's time to tear it up
Now let me tell you what I got

Well, I got one shot and the night is young
So don't wait up for me
I need another hit before I'm done
So don't wait up for me

Well, I got one shot and the night is young
So don't wait up for me
I need another hit before I'm done
So don't wait up for me

One shot, the night is young
So don't wait up for me

I need another hit before I'm done
So don't wait up for me

Overall Meaning

In “Don't Wait Up For Me”, The Donnas sing about the desire to live life to the fullest without being tied down by the expectations of others. The opening lines of the song make it clear that the singer is aware of their admirer but doesn't feel an obligation to dial their number. She encourages them to “get themselves together” because she doesn't require their love as much as they expect her to. She then goes on to describe a wild night that includes getting drunk and living free. She states that she needs another drink before calling it a night, given there's no way to know what will happen or where she will show. The song ends with her reiterating that she needs more time and more drinking before calling it a night.

The song reminds us that we don't have to take life too seriously and that it's okay to indulge from time to time. The singer is an independent woman who is enjoying herself without needing the approval of anyone else. The lyrics encourage listeners to let go of their inhibitions, to live in the moment, and have as much fun as possible, without worrying about potential consequences. The upbeat tempo and catchy chorus make it all too easy to get lost in the song's subject matter.

I love how they started in school and traveled there entire journey together. It makes the ending sadder but it was one of the best rides to follow. I will always have a strong love for The Donnas. They didn't just sound good they were a part of something rare that alot of bands didn't have, the Donnas had a strong connection with each other that started at a awesome time for a musician. I hope there doing well. They'll always be the queens of noize in my heart.

@BMXheath

Really wish I had found this band years ago. They kick ass

@jeffweir8454

I hope their hiatus doesn't become permanent. The world needs more The Donnas albums!

@SuperChuckRaney

I know this post is old, but the drummer hurt her shoulder or something.
they won't be back soon, if at all.

@Knightveil

@@SuperChuckRaney Tori developed shoulder tendinitis, an inflammation of the tendons in her shoulders. If you watch older videos that show her playing you'll notice she uses far too much shoulder in her playing. Drums should be played primarily with the wrist and forearm. Unfortunately, she was unable to learn the proper technique before the tendinitis became too severe to continue playing.

@@Knightveil Damn shame. This band was FIRE!

Matthew Wilbur This is good info - thanks for sharing. Will check her early technique
