Wasted
The Donnas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wasted
I'm so wasted
Empty since you left me
I still need him and want him
Without him I'm nothing
If I can't do something
To get him to come home on to me
Wasted
Love's been wasted
Guess I'm not too brainy
I was selfish and foolish
I used and abused him
And laughed when he threatened to walk out
But now he's done it

He was like the moon
He had his darker side
But he could be the sun
Shinning in the light

Wasted
Sure I'm wasted
Knowing he don't love me
Such a sad thing about him
To know that I love him
And nothing I say or I do will return
Say I'm wasted

He was like the moon
He had his darker side
But he could be the sun
Shinning in the light

Wasted
Sure I'm wasted
Knowing he don't love me
Wasted

Sure I'm wasted
Knowing he don't love me

Overall Meaning

The Donnas' song "Wasted" is a classic portrayal of the pain and desperation felt after a lover has left. The lyrics express a deep sense of loss and longing, as the singer laments the emptiness and worthlessness she feels without her lover. The repetition of the word "wasted" reflects not only the character's drunken state but also her despair, indicating that all her efforts were in vain.

The singer's vulnerability is revealed through her admission that she was selfish and foolish, and that her lover has finally had enough of her mistreatment. She had taken him for granted, using and abusing him while laughing at his threats to leave. However, she now understands the gravity of her mistakes and realizes that nothing she says or does will bring him back.

The metaphor of the moon and sun illustrates the complexity of her lover's character. He had a darker side, but he also had the ability to shine like the sun. The singer recognizes the beauty and value of his dual nature, and knows that she will never find another who compares to him.

Overall, "Wasted" is a poignant reflection on the painful aftermath of a breakup, and the regret and self-awareness that often accompany it.

umm... the Donnas never officially broke up. They'll play when they want... and Torry didn't "hurt her wrists." She had to stop playing drums because she had chronic tendonitis in her shoulder. Amy Cesari plays the drums with the Donnas now, although it has been a couple years. They were last recording around 2012, and played a couple shows that year. For us "old people," a few years just flies by when you have a life, and time goes by faster than you want sometimes. But, the Donnas will play again some day.... 🎸 (edited for a mispeeling 😵)
