Gloria
The Doors猀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah, right

Did you hear about my baby? She come around
She come round here, the head to the ground?
Come round here just about midnight
She makes me feel so good, make me feel all right

She come round my street, now
She come to my house and
Knock upon my door
Climbing up my stairs, one, two
Come on baby
Here she is in my room, oh boy

Hey what’s your name?
How old are you?
Where’d you go to school?
Aha, yeah
Aha, yeah
Ah, ah yeah, ah yeah
Oh haa, mmm

Well, now that we know each other a little bit better
Why don’t you come over here
Make me feel all right!

Gloria, Gloria
Gloria, Gloria
Gloria, Gloria
All night, all day
All right, okey, yey!
(Gloria, Gloria)

You were my queen and I was your fool
Riding home after school
You took me home
To your house
Your father’s at work
Your mama’s out shopping around
Check me into your room
Show me your thing
Why’d you do it baby?

Getting softer, slow it down
Softer, get it down

Now you show me your thing
Wrap your legs around my neck
Wrap your arms around my feet, yeah
Wrap your hair around my skin
I’m gonna huh, right, ok, yeah

It’s getting harder, it’s getting too darn fast
It’s getting harder

All right!
Come on, now, let’s get it on
Too late, too late, too late
Too late, too late, too late
Can’t stop, wow!
Make me feel all right!

Gloria, Gloria
Gloria, Gloria
Gloria, Gloria
All night, all day
All right, okey, yey!
(Gloria, Gloria)

Keep the whole thing going, baby!
All right!

All right!
Aaaaah!

Overall Meaning

The Doors' song "Gloria" depicts a sexual encounter between the singer and a woman he refers to as "Gloria". The song starts off with the singer sharing his excitement about "Gloria" coming over to his place and making him feel good. He then asks her questions about herself and the two get to know each other better. As the song progresses, the sexual tension between the two builds up and they engage in explicit physical acts, with the singer expressing his pleasure and excitement. The song ends with the singer encouraging "Gloria" to continue and make him feel alright.

The song is somewhat controversial due to its frank portrayal of sexuality and its explicit lyrics. The Doors were known for their dark and experimental music, but "Gloria" stands out as a departure from their usual style. Some critics have interpreted the song as a celebration of freedom and sexual liberation, while others have criticized it for objectifying women and promoting a sexist attitude.

This song always reminds me of my mother. She had a pretty hard life, 2 divorces one from an abusive alcoholic, raised 4 kids, and died at 42 of cancer. But on occasion this song would play on the radio and she'd forget her worries for just a moment and sing it like Laura Brangahan herself. My best memories was when I was in college and we went to 2 weddings within 2 years and we danced to this practically clearing that dance floor. I just remember her wide smile and how happy she was in the moment. After the 2nd wedding, she was gone by the following year, but before she went I played this for her in the hospital and tho she couldn't sing, she flashed that signature smile. This song will forever and always be her song to me.

@AliceP.

What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing. My mother has passed too. These memories are worth more than pure gold, I do know :)
