Break on Trough
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah
We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
A-can you still recall
Time we cried?
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Hey!

Come on!
Yeah

Everybody loves my baby
Everybody loves my baby

She get high, she get high, she get high
She get high, yeah

I found an island in your arms
Country in your eyes
Arms that chained us
Eyes that lied
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through, ow!
Aw yeah!

Made the scene, week to week
Day to day, hour to hour
Gate is straight
Deep and wide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side

Break on through, break on through
Break on through, break on through

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Doors's song Break on Through are about breaking free from societal norms and expectations and embracing one's true self. The verses describe the cyclical nature of life, where the day destroys the night and the night divides the day. The singer of the song has tried to escape this cycle and has 'chased pleasures' and 'dug treasures' to no avail. He urges himself to break on through to the other side and embrace a new way of being.

The chorus is a call to action, urging the listener to join in and break free as well. The repeated phrases 'break on through to the other side' and 'hey' create a sense of urgency and excitement, as if the singer is on the brink of a major breakthrough. The verse about the 'island in your arms' and 'country in your eyes' is likely a reference to the idea of finding solace and freedom in a romantic partner, but the reminder that 'arms that chained us' and 'eyes that lied' suggests that this too is a false escape.

Overall, the lyrics reflect the countercultural movement of the 1960s and the desire to break free from societal constraints and embrace a more authentic way of living.

'' and is better than the music of today''
What music of today do you even listen to? If Miley Cyrus is who you take as an example of music of today, then it's your own fault for not knowing other stuff.

It really grinds my gears when people take this posture of ''nothing is as good as the old days''. Most people got stuck in their musical taste at their teenage years and don't listen to anything new.

I'm not even arguing that I know of examples that are 'better' than The Doors. But I also don't compare. There's good music and bad music, but there is no such thing as better or worse music.

Just so I don't fall on the trap of just being another internet hater complaining about hate, here's some examples of music of today that I listen to and that I think deserve a listen:

- Awolnation - In a weird way I kind of compare them to the Doors. Fun and mystical at the same time. They got huge with their song ''Sail'', and were quickly forgotten. Kind of a one hit wonder, but with a far more interesting catalog than what the hit would make you believe.

- Heilung - Music inspired by Viking folklore. Some of the music is even from actual records, so it's probably really similiar to what the Vikings were actually playing and singing.

- Burial - Tear-dropping electronic music. Until a couple of years ago no one even knew who this guy really was. He never plays live, but his music has influence so many producers from the early 00's to now.

- Corpo-Mente - Do you like Metal? Do you like Polka? Do you like Classical music? Do you like heavy electronic music? Do you like Opera? Well... just listen to it. And also listen to ''Igorrr'. He's part of the band and I find them through him. His solo project is heavier than the band a more inclined to the electronic side.

- Otoboke Beaver - Japanese, 3 piece, punk, all-female band. I don't know how to describe it...

- James Blake - Solo artist, electronic music producer and singer. Very emotional music, but a lot more digestible than Burial.

- Sampa the Great - Rapper/soul singer. Sometimes it's more like reggae, some times more African sounding. It's really good.

- A-WA - Israeli trio of singers. Pop electronic music with middle eastern vibes.

- half.alive - Indie? Pop-rock? Very smooth band, upbeat but chill. Great voice.

This are some examples that I remember right now. I'm not even including amazing producers of specific electronic music genres , because they just go too much out of the box for most people. But everyone should try to open their mind to some electronic music, not everything is EDM or Dubstep.

And I'm not even mentioning the recognized greats of our era. Gorillaz is probably one of the most important music icons of all time.

@Simon Lobo Agree. the voice draws me in, the instrumentals keep me there. Masterpieces have a tendency to do that.
