Don't Go No Further
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You need meat,
Go to the market
You need bread,
Try the bakery
You need lovin'
Look here, baby
I got just what you need
I gotta love somebody
I gotta love somebody
I gotta love somebody
Somebody gonna love me

You need money,
Go to the bank, dear
You need honey,
Look to the bees
You need lovin'
Come on here, woman
Well, I got just what you need

I wanna love somebody
I gotta love somebody
I gotta love somebody
Somebody gonna love me

Oh, play it now

You need meat
Go to the market
You need bread,
Try the bakery
If you need lovin'
Come on here, baby
Well, I got just what you need

I wanna love somebody
Yeah, love somebody
I gotta love somebody
Somebody got to love me

Play your guitar

You need money
Go to the bank, dear
If you need honey
Go find a bee
If need lovin'
Well I'm your doctor
I've got people sick
On what you need

I gotta love somebody
Whoa, love

I wanna love somebody
Somebody gonna love me

Overall Meaning

In β€œDon’t Go No Further,” The Doors' vocalist Jim Morrison uses metaphorical language to describe the different kinds of things that people may need or want in life, including material possessions like food and money, as well as intangible things like love and affection. He suggests that these needs can be met in various ways, but ultimately, he claims to have everything that his lover requires. The song expresses a desire for reciprocated love, with Morrison repeating the phrase "I gotta love somebody" throughout the song.

The song has a bluesy feel to it, with a simple chord progression and laid-back instrumentation. The repeated refrain of "gotta love somebody" adds a catchy, sing-along quality to the track. Overall, the lyrics suggest a yearning for connection and the universal human need for love and fulfillment.

@RitualStench

It's always so fascinating to hear Ray singing & it not be backup. I never would've expected him to have such a great voice of his own, & I love it.

@aboutsoundandvision

If you weren't aware already there were two Doors albums made after Morrison's death with Manzarek on the lead vocals. They are Other Voices (1971) and Full Circle (1972). Just in case you wanted more Ray vocals.

@Scyllax

He sings "Close To You" (Willie Dixon) on the Absolutely Live Album. He also sang leads on his earlier group's singles.

@jeneferey

Often, when Jim was too drunk to appear live, Ray would cover for him
