Gloria
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah, right

Did you hear about my baby? She come around
She come round here, the head to the ground?
Come round here just about midnight
She makes me feel so good, make me feel all right

She come round my street, now
She come to my house and
Knock upon my door
Climbing up my stairs, one, two
Come on baby
Here she is in my room, oh boy

Hey what's your name?
How old are you?
Where'd you go to school?
Aha, yeah
Aha, yeah
Ah, ah yeah, ah yeah
Oh haa, mmm

Well, now that we know each other a little bit better
Why don't you come over here
Make me feel all right!

Gloria, Gloria
Gloria, Gloria
Gloria, Gloria
All night, all day
All right, okey, yey!
(Gloria, Gloria)

You were my queen and I was your fool
Riding home after school
You took me home
To your house
Your father's at work
Your mama's out shopping around
Check me into your room
Show me your thing
Why'd you do it baby?

Getting softer, slow it down
Softer, get it down

Now you show me your thing
Wrap your legs around my neck
Wrap your arms around my feet, yeah
Wrap your hair around my skin
I'm gonna huh, right, ok, yeah

It's getting harder, it's getting too darn fast
It's getting harder

All right!
Come on, now, let's get it on
Too late, too late, too late
Too late, too late, too late
Can't stop, wow!
Make me feel all right!

Gloria, Gloria
Gloria, Gloria
Gloria, Gloria
All night, all day
All right, okey, yey!
(Gloria, Gloria)

Keep the whole thing going, baby!
All right!
All right!
Aaaaah!

Overall Meaning

The song “Gloria” by The Doors is primarily about a sexual encounter. It tells the story of a woman who comes to the singer's house, climbs up his stairs and enters his room. Throughout the song, the singer asks about the woman's name, age, and education. The lyrics suggest that this encounter is not the first time the two have been together. The woman performs oral sex on the singer and then they have intercourse. The explicit lyrics create a controversial and scandalous effect, as the song was released in the late 1960s, when sexual content was not commonly seen in mainstream popular music.

The chorus repeats the name “Gloria” over and over, creating a sort of chant. The repetition, combined with the driving guitar riff, gives the song an almost hypnotic quality. The lyrics gradually become more frenzied, as the singer urges the woman to “wrap your legs around my neck” and “wrap your hair around my skin.”

The song was initially written and performed by Van Morrison, formerly of the rock band Them. The Doors covered the song live and included it on their 1979 album “Alive, She Cried.” The Doors’ version of the song features a new arrangement and a different set of lyrics. The song has been covered by several artists and has become a rock classic.

My friends Jim and Ken Collier promoted the bayfront disaster.

I felt bad for Jim after what happened with that. It's great to see him up here like this

There are two times I could have met him. When I was hanging out with Velvet underground in New York and down in Miami when he was coming in for that concert

Sadly I never got the chance

Today July third we lost both Jim and Brian Jones.

Patti Smith is up on substack today with me doing a tribute to both of them.

The best "Gloria" performance ever. The Doors are "outside of time", pure gold, pure soul, pure love. Something essential, I haven't a word...👍👍👍

Other people drink coffee in the morning to get ready for their day. I listen to this song instead. It prepares me for the day.
