When you're a stranger
Faces look ugly
When you're alone
Women seem wicked
When you're unwanted
Streets are uneven
When you're down
When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange
People are strange
When you're a stranger
Faces look ugly
When you're alone
Women seem wicked
When you're unwanted
Streets are uneven
When you're down
When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange
All right, yeah!
When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange
The Doors’ “People Are Strange” is a melancholic ride that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of loneliness and isolation. The song describes how everything around us can seem strange and uncomfortable when we are feeling down and out. This effect is emphasized by the repetition of the opening verse which is sung twice in the beginning and end of the song. The lyrics delve into how people and situations can appear extremely strange if one is feeling like a stranger, an outsider in the world around them.
Jim Morrison’s vocals are full of raw emotion and create a perfect enigma around the song. The repeated line “When you’re strange”, adds to the sense of mystery as it is left open to interpretation. The verses indirectly point towards the idea of alienation and social exclusion which lead to a sense of disorientation. The lines “Faces come out of the rain” and “No one remembers your name” encapsulate this feeling of loneliness while the line “Women seem wicked when you're unwanted”, adds a subtle theme of misogyny.
Overall, “People Are Strange” is a haunting reminder that the state of our minds has a huge role to play in the way we perceive the world around us. The song is an ode to the darker, more vulnerable side of the human psyche and how negative thoughts can color our perception of everything we see.

When Jim told the other bandmates to start writing songs, Jim said just write about something that will last for time, not trendy things.(This is according to Robbie). Robbie thought about it, & came up with "Light My Fire"!!! So trendy themes are out. This song, & most of other "Doors" songs, are proving the test of time, as you said.

They stand the test of time like was said because like true art it lives forever

I love the story behind this song. Jim came to Robby and John one day and was very depressed. They told him to take a nice walk up to the top of the hill over looking LA. He came back an hour later with the whole song written on a piece of paper. It’s safe to say that Jim was a lyrical genius, and should not only be remembered as lead frontman of The Doors, but a brilliant poet as well.

But Robbie wrote their two biggest hits (Light My Fire and Touch Me)....both hit number 1 on Billboard

@@sidcostello7532 the popularity of the song isn't really a measurement of how good the lyrics are
