Riders On The Storm
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house, we're born
Into this world, we're thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Riders on the storm
There's a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin' like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If you give this man a ride
Sweet family will die
Killer on the road, yeah

Girl, you gotta love your man
Girl, you gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends
Our life will never end
Gotta love your man, yeah

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house, we're born
Into this world, we're thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Riders on the storm

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm

Overall Meaning

The Doors' "Riders on the Storm" is a captivating song that paints vivid imagery of a dark, stormy night. The repetition of the opening line "Riders on the storm" creates an eerie and haunting presence, setting the tone for the rest of the song. The lyrics suggest that the riders are wandering aimlessly, uncertain of their destination, much like the uncertainty of life itself. The line "Into this house, we're born, into this world, we're thrown" illustrates the idea that we are all born into a world without control over our destiny.

The song takes a darker turn when the lyrics mention a "killer on the road" whose brain is "squirmin' like a toad." The chilling lyrics continue, warning against giving the killer a ride, as it could result in the death of an innocent family. This concept of danger lurking on the road and the uncertainty of what we may encounter is further emphasized through the repeated line "Riders on the storm."

The song's final verses offer a glimmer of hope through the idea of love. The lyrics suggest that love and understanding are the key to unlocking our fate in this world. "Girl, you gotta love your man, take him by the hand, make him understand" implies that through love and communication, we can find our purpose and overcome the uncertainty that life presents us.

Overall, "Riders on the Storm" is a powerful song that explores the complex themes of uncertainty, danger, and love in a way that is both poetic and haunting.

" a fantastic atmospheric, spiritual journey " Jim's words are about a serial killer hitch hiking the highways of America slaughtering families. The music was adapted from Ghostriders in the Sky written in 1948 by Stan Jones while he was working as a National Park Ranger and Tour Guide.

@komputnik

@david hounslow So he would never killed anyone when his woman stood by him ? Some kind of Boney and Clide ? I'm curious…

I like the bass line and the crash of thunder. I think it really makes the song.
