Someday Soon
The Doors Lyrics

Someday soon
Someday soon
Familiar breeze will fill your living room
Rugs lash out their lizards tongues
You're not getting young
You're not getting young
But you're going to die
And you're going to be needing all of your lies
You'll be all alone when the animals cry
All by yourself in the infancy's lie
Someday soon
Someday soon
Television bleeding like a harvest moon
Flush the scissors down the hole
You're getting old
You're getting old
And I hate to remind you but you're going to die
And you're going to be needing all of your lies
You'll be all alone when the animals cry
All by yourself in the infancy's lie
Someday soon
Someday soon

Overall Meaning

In The Doors' "Someday Soon," the ominous repetition of the phrase "someday soon" creates an unsettling feeling throughout the song. The lyrics suggest a gradual decay, with references to rugs shedding their skins like lizards, television bleeding like a harvest moon, and the flushing of scissors down a hole. The imagery implies a sense of rot and disintegration, with the inevitability of death looming in the distance, getting closer with each repetition of the phrase. The line "you're not getting young" reinforces this sense of time passing, and the singer's whispered reminder that "you're going to die" is chilling.

The final stanza paints a picture of the singer addressing a specific individual, one who will be alone when the animals cry - an ambiguous statement that could suggest either the end of the world or a personal reckoning. The repetition of "all by yourself in the infancy's lie" reinforces this idea that there is no escaping the truth of our own mortality and we will ultimately be faced with the consequences of our actions. The final line of the song, "someday soon," is a powerful coda that brings the song full circle, reminding us that this sense of unease and decay is something that we can never fully shake.

Overall, The Doors created a haunting piece of music that speaks to the universal fear of mortality and reminds us of the transience of all things.

This is one of my all time favourite songs. Period.

Despite the quality of the recording and looseness of the performance, despite no official studio recording, despite there being only 2 known live versions. Despite all that, this is still one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

The melody is solemn yet catchy. The lyrics are deep and prophetic and just like Jim, still a little playful. The outro is so bold and proud. The song has pain and perhaps a little venom even, yet somehow it’s still so wise and hopeful.

If I had a time machine I would do everything and anything I could to get these 4 guys into a studio to record this song properly.

Having said that, part of the haunting charm of this song is that this is all there is and that’s part of why I love it so much. Just goes to show a great song is a great song even if it only exists as a rendition like this.

I don’t want to say there’s no good music any more cause there is plenty, but says a lot when a half baked live version of a song from 50 years ago is still on another level all together than most of the well produced songs I might hear today..

@FlowerPowerRockGirl 3333 Hello again FlowerPowerRockGirl! Yes you are very right again. I think that is what Jim was trying to say when he would shout out "Wake Up" at a concert. It's easy to get caught up in everyday life and just like the hamster find ourselves stuck in the routine. Somehow deep down we know something is wrong, or at least that we know we would like there to be more to life.

Some people would say well you just need to manage your time better, and yes sometimes you do have to make things a priority if you want them, but it can be very hard when you are struggling just to stay afloat and you are so tired all the time and there's rent to pay, "Trade in your hours for a handful of dimes"

I always liked this part in The Soft Parade too, I think it's a similar sentiment to Someday Soon

"All our lives we sweat and save
Building for a shallow grave
Must be something else we say
Somehow to defend this place"

Listening to The Doors always helps me become aware of what my "bauchgefühl" is trying to tell me and so it's good to remind myself to 'Wake Up' !! and hopefully get to make the chance in life to do something about it!

Hello Mr. Moon duster, this is also one of my favorite songs of the doors😆. You describe the song very good in the detail, this I like. 👍. Anywhere I would also to go in a time Maschine to record this beautiful song🤩👏😊😍. The lyrics make me to think alot. Someday soon. Maybe he sings about you think the someday is still far far away so in front, but when you have sleep to much or you didn't want to realise that someday comes from one moment to the next... 1, and then 2.somday has comed🤔😢😭. Then it's to late. This is just my philosophy thinking to this song. Greetings to you from germany ✌️🎶🇩🇪

FlowerPowerRockGirl 3333 Hello! Yeah I think you are right. Time can slip away so easily. We always tell ourselves we still got plenty of time right up until we find out it’s too late!

The irony is we often stress and worry about the things that we really do still have plenty of time for as though we need to do them right here and now, yet we put off all the things that we don’t have the time for, only to turn around one day and wonder where has all the time gone!

@FlowerPowerRockGirl

@TheMoonDuster hello Mrs. Or Mr. Moon duster, first of all iam very happy that you wrote me back.. 😊👍. O. K. That's good that I understood it right. I like to philosophy about music and live and death. Yeah that's the real problem, we don't think we have enough time to do "other things" (which we really want to do at this moment or in young future), because we think this is now important like go to work, things you have to do.. But in our heart we feel it's not right what we are doing, but we yust ignore it the feelings, and than.. Someday soon how the doors sings it is to late. I have just learned in few times ago to try to listen to my heart and belly feeling(😅😂😂in German we call it bauchgefühl). But it's hard when you are in your own circle like a hamster, and you have no one beside you😔. Stay healthy, if you want we can continue to philosophy 😉😊. If not, no problem. Keep on rockin 🤘🤘☮️✌️🏵️🦋
