The Mosquito
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's more than one girl in here
To deal with all the pleasures
And all the pain and all the guilt
They bring
There's a knot in the string
That links my childhood
With my present
It blocks me
Yet, the passion remains the same
They just keep changing names on me

There are things I refuse to deal with
Scary things that come out in awkward ways
Fake it, do I fake it?
The Dreamer Girl fakes it better than I do it for real
Yet, the passion remains the same
They just keep changing names on me
On me
There must be something on me!

Little did I know I was
Standing on a rock that has now turned to sand
Turned to sand

And it's about rejection and it's about shame and
It's about walking away with what little dignity you can save
And it's about approval and it's about making it
To fill this jealous empty hole inside
Yet, the passion remains the same
They just keep changing names on me

On me
There must be something on me!
Little did I know I was

Standing on a rock that has now turned to sand
Turned to sand

Overall Meaning

The Doors' "The Mosquito" is a song that speaks to the complexities of dealing with relationships and the emotional aftermath that lingers long after they may have ended. The first few lines refer to the presence of multiple women in the singer's life, and the fact that they bring both pleasure and pain. The passion that exists also remains the same but the names of the women in question constantly changes. The singer is aware of the presence of the emotional chord that connects their present to their childhood, however, it feels like a knot in the string – overwhelming, blocking, and obstructing him from moving on. The last line, "There must be something on me" highlights the crushing feeling of being unable to break away from these emotional ties.

The lyrics continue to delve into heavier subject matter. There are aspects of the singer's life that they refuse to face and arguably avoid by pretending or faking it. The singer compares themselves to the "Dreamer Girl," suggesting a façade of emotional well-being that feels fake. There is something simmering beneath the surface, a fear or rejection and shame, and the internal battle between wanting approval and filling an "empty hole inside". Throughout the song, the themes of change, loss, and moving on permeate the lyrics with the outcome being a sense of fragility and hurt, just like standing on a rock that has now turned to sand.

I saw Robby Krieger play at a very small club in Orlando in November of '01. I was up front right against the stage. It was such a cool vibe because everyone in the club was a huge Doors fan. In between a couple songs I yelled out "Mosquito!" a few times. To my surprise he sang about 15 seconds of it. So cool of him to do that. I was able to meet him too when he took a short break off stage. He seemed like such a regular guy for someone so big in rock history. All things considered, it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
