The movie
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The movie will begin in five moments
The mindless voice announced
All those unseated will await the next show.

We filed slowly, languidly into the hall
The auditorium was vast and silent
As we seated and were darkened, the voice continued.
The program for this evening is not new
You've seen this entertainment through and through
You've seen your birth your life and death
you might recall all of the rest
Did you have a good world when you died?
Enough to base a movie on?.

I'm getting out of here
Where are you going?
To the other side of morning
Please don't chase the clouds, pagodas

Her cunt gripped him like a warm, friendly hand.

It's alright, all your friends are here
When can I meet them?
After you've eaten
I'm not hungry
Uh, we meant beaten

Silver stream, silvery scream

Oooooh, impossible concentration.

Overall Meaning

The Doors' "The Movie" is a thought-provoking and cryptic piece that can be perceived in various ways. There are two clearly distinct moments of the song, the first being the "movie announcement" and the second being a conversation that takes place during a sexual experience. The first lines indicate that the show is about to start, and whoever was "unseated," or whoever died, will wait for the next one. As the singer and listeners walk into the vast and silent auditorium to take their seats, the voice announces that the program for the evening is not new and they have seen this entertainment through and through. It seems like the singer is addressing some philosophical questions to the audience, asking whether their life was good enough to base a movie on, implying that what they've seen is not just a show, but their own life.

The second part of the song is where it gets strange. The singer says he's getting out of there and going to the other side of the morning, and warns not to chase the clouds or pagodas. This sudden change of scenery indicates a change in perspective, and could signify a liberation from the physical world. Then follows a conversation between two unknown persons that involves some unsettling language. "Her cunt gripped him like a warm, friendly hand" suggests an intense sexual experience, while "it's alright, all your friends are here" and "when can I meet them?" imply the existence of an afterlife or some other realm where dead people's friends await them. The last line, "impossible concentration," could imply that the participants in the conversation have attained some altered state of consciousness during the sexual experience.

I found this poem about Jim Morrison in a wild and beautiful poetry book:
“12:12 Midnight” by Danielle Ever Rose

THROUGH THE BREAKS
A wild child like the calm before the storm,
A mesmerizing danger,
Stirs up the world with a whirlwind of words.

A lizard king waits in the sun among the desert lords,
A spirit and mind mixed together with a poetic nature,
Steps through the breaks of time,
Opening the door to the other side.

Between this world and the next,
His voice will be heard forever echoing from the beyond.

Tune in or tune out,
However you can hear the songs.
RIP Jim Morrison

1 time there was a man
was it him?
Love me 2 times
Shaman Jim?
We passed 3 and 4
in seventy-one
For our Shamanistic Poet
was on the run
Made his 5th call
in seventy-three
A mere 6the sense
for you and me?
Why anytime he rings
you'll know it's heaven
For we know the meaning
of number 7

I love this video. The Doors - my first concert in Philadelphia. $5 - This video captures the raw experience of the poor sound quality of those early days. It was all black and white, no fancy light shows. Didn't matter to us, we all knew the music from carrying around albums like kids carry cell phones today. We loved the Doors. We did feel good. We were all high passing joints and hash pipes. We went to the anti-war rallies, Earth Day and believed we could change the world. We changed nothing. The world is a filthy mess where our only value is in being a consumer. Our ballroom days are over. But it was amazing to be part of the movement, the passion was real. The Doors shared their energy and zest for life - I still love listening to Morrison scream and yell and at moments his voice is pure black velvet.

@Gigi Sasz You need to read Dave McGowan. And figure out how politics really works in this country.

@Brian Jacob totally disagree! I lived it and what you said is youthful nonsense to me! I don’t think you are old enough to know! That’s my OPINION and stop responding back cuz I’m done talkin’ and I don’t argue.. it’s a waist of time.

@Gigi Sasz old enough to know what I'm talking about...

There will never be another Jim Morrison. He was definitely one of a kind

I got to see the Doors early '67 right before they broke nationally. They were still a local LA band at that point. But that performance blew me away. You could sense that Morrison wouldn't live too long. He was just too wild. Right from the start.

I am the lizard king, I can do anything

@clarkewi Nice post. I too saw shows at the same venue, just a tad later.
