Whiskey Mystics and Men
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

First there were women and children obeying the moon
Then daylight brought wisdom and fever and sickness too soon

You can try to remind me instead of the other you can
You can help to insure that we all insecure our command
If you don't give a listen, I won't try to tell your new hand
This is it, can't you see that we all have our ends in the band?
And if all of the teachers and preachers of wealth were arraigned
We could see quite a future for me in the literal sands

And if all of the people could claim to inspect such regret
Well, we'd have no forgiveness, forgetfulness, faithful remorse

So, I tell you, I tell you, I tell you we must send away
We must try to find a new answer instead of a way

Overall Meaning

The first two lines of "Whiskey Mystics and Men" by The Doors suggest a cycle of light and darkness, birth and death, beginnings and endings. The "women and children" obeying the moon could represent the beginning of life, while "daylight" bringing "wisdom" could symbolize the harshness of reality that comes with growing up. "Fever" and "sickness too soon" might refer to the inevitability of death, that it comes before we're ready for it.

The next few lines show a sense of urgency to take action and make a change. The singer implores the listener to "give a listen" and help "insure that we all insecure our command," possibly referring to the need to question authority and power structures. The line "This is it, can't you see that we all have our ends in the band?" suggests that we're all in this together, whether we like it or not. We all play our parts and eventually come to our end.

The rest of the song echoes this sentiment of change and taking action. The lines "we must try to find a new answer instead of a way" suggest that we need to find innovative solutions to problems rather than relying on the same old ways. Overall, "Whiskey Mystics and Men" seems to be a call for active engagement in the world to affect positive change.

would've loved to have heard what jim thought of the allman brothers. interesting at the start his bouncing of ideas off robbie's western buck owens guitar riffs. you can subtley hear how jim brings that echo ghostly part of that sound into this song. the doors understood amer music vernacular from all its influences, south & west, much more then they get credit for... you can hear some of these ideas bouncing around w/ some other bands at the same time such as the almans, rare earth etc.
