Light My Fire
The Doors of the 21st Century Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah

The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire

Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Doors' classic hit "Light My Fire" is a passionate appeal for a lover to ignite the singer's innermost desires. The song starts with a statement of honesty: "You know that it would be untrue / You know that I would be a liar / If I was to say to you / Girl, we couldn't get much higher." The singer is acknowledging the potential for intense emotional and physical connections with their partner, but more specifically, they want their lover to "light [their] fire."

The next verse follows up on this proposal, stating that "The time to hesitate is through / No time to wallow in the mire / Try now we can only lose / And our love become a funeral pyre." The singer urges their partner to seize the moment and take a chance on their relationship. They fear that if they don't act now, their love will fizzle out and die. The chorus repeats the opening lines, emphasizing the desire for passion and connection: "Come on baby, light my fire / Try to set the night on fire." In essence, the song is a plea for uninhibited passion and intense love.

Such a cool version!! I hadn't previously realized how similar Ian Astbury actually looks like Jim Morrison.

@Cynthia B Aaaw! That's a very good story though. :) Of the bands you've mentioned I've only actually seen Deep Purple live, but at least I managed to get to see them up close, at a distance of less than ten metres. That was in the early 2000s, I've always been a big Purple fan and they put in a very good show (Manfred Mann were on the same bill). I have many of those acts on live albums and dvd's though - got Hendrix's Woodstock gig on dvd a few years after it was offically released and I've watched the main Woodstock movie a couple of times of course.

It's become far more expensive to go to live concerts than it used to be, and sadly some of the names one most wanted to see have left the stage... :(

Cynthia B

@Louise Rose no I was 10 when Morrison died. Although my extremely hip mother did try to take me to Woodstock. Unfortunately her Chevy Corvair threw a rod in NC on the way from Atlanta. All her $ was spent on hotel and car repair. We had to turn back, much to my grandfather’s satisfaction ❤️

Louise Rose

@Cynthia B Wow yes! Amazing...I take it that you didn't get to see the Doors back in the day though? :)

Cynthia B

@Louise Rose absolutely. I just saw the Cult 10 days ago in Atlanta at a small venue that was once a church. Killer show. We were at the stage. Loudest show I’ve ever been to and I’ve seen Deep Purple Zeppelin, Ozzy Solo Tour, Black Sabbath, the Sex Pistols, the plasmatics and everyone in between. My ears rang for 4 days straight

Louise Rose

@Cynthia B Yep! I remember seeing Ian with the Cult on MTV in the mid-eighties ("Rain"). Had never heard of them before but it was immediately clear what a great frontman he would make.
