Kiss My Friends
The Downtown Fiction Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I walk out in a plastic raincoat
I'm looking like an American psycho
I wanna love you like crazy I wanna call you baby
I'm listening to the awkward silence
From the girl with the painted eyelids
I wanna love you like crazy I wanna call you maybe

Everyone wants make a scene and watch their face
Light up on the tv screen

I get high, I get low
I wake up every night, I go out
And kiss all my friends
And then start again
I get high, I get low
I wake up every night, I go out
And kiss all my friends
And then start again
(I get high)

Purple lips in the new apartment
B-side in the glove compartment
I wanna love you like crazy I wanna call you baby
The street calls when it's after midnight
It feels good and it's just too alright
I wanna love you like crazy I wanna call you maybe

Everyone wants to make a move you
gotta get yours fast and they'll get theirs, too

I get high, I get low
I wake up every night, I go out
And kiss all my friends
And then start again
I get high, I get low
I wake up every night, I go out
And kiss all my friends
And then start again
(I get high)

I get high, I get low
I wake up every night, I go out
And kiss all my friends
And then start again
I get high, I get low
I wake up every night, I go out
And kiss all my friends

And then start again
(I get high)

Overall Meaning

The Downtown Fiction's song Kiss My Friends is a subversive love song that tells the story of a character who is looking for love in all the wrong places. The seemingly rebellious character is dressed in a plastic raincoat and is reminiscent of the character Patrick Bateman from the movie American Psycho. Despite the unconventional attire, the character is looking for love and wants to call their object of affection "baby". They listen to the "awkward silence from the girl with the painted eyelids" and want to sweep her off her feet.

The chorus "I get high, I get low, I wake up every night, I go out, and kiss all my friends, and then start again" serves as a reminder of the character's unsettled nature. The character is addicted to the thrill of meeting and kissing new people and is caught in a cycle of chasing the highs and lows of love. The song captures the dichotomy of wanting love and connection while also embracing the chaos of living life on the edge.
