and 3 on me, you know
5 cigarettes gonna have to last the night,
you know
cause the money that I had's
been spent 2 months
you try to make it last but it never does
and I've been smoking just way too much
Burn away burn away
It's burning a black hole right through me
I'm getting real sick of getting used to this, you know
can't remember it any different, I'm sure you know
cause I've spent a lot of days, and nights,
and those mornings that I hate, with lo zee rose,
looking for a place that I should know by now, you know
Burn away burn away
It's burning a black hole right through me
The Draft's song 'Lo Zee Rose' tells a tale of financial struggle and desperation. The opening lines establish the grim state of the singer's finances - with only $25 to their name and just three cigarettes left, they are forced to make the most out of a dire situation. Months have gone by since they've been able to stretch their funds, and they've resorted to smoking excessively to cope with the stress. As the song progresses, we learn that such hardships have become all too familiar for the singer. It is evident from their bitter tone that they are tired of being stuck in this predicament and are longing for a change in their circumstances.
The chorus, 'Burn away burn away, it's burning a black hole right through me,' encapsulates the crushing weight of financial burden and how it can feel like one's life is being consumed by it. The singer's frustration is further emphasized in the line, 'I'm getting real sick of getting used to this,' and the sentiment of feeling stuck and hoping for a breakthrough is also conveyed in the line, 'looking for a place that I should know by now, you know.' All these lyrics come together to paint a picture of a person struggling to keep their head above water in harsh economic times.
