Forest Fire
The Dream Academy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For short lived cattle grazing land
With the whole world in their hands
They're cutting down and burning up the land
Asset stripping the medicine man
& all for one
And every man for himself
The conflict of interest lies
Selling off cheap
Avoid political heat and burn up in a forest fire

And now that there's nothing left
Just a hole above our heads
Letting the sunshine in
That's how the end begins
With a forest fire

The black cloud rising in the sky
Up into the atmosphere
] it's bringing down a different kind of weather
To the one we knew last year
And
Though it's taking so long to do something about it
They chip away at it
Bit by bit
You won't believe anything that grown up for so long
Could be cut down this quick

And now that there's nothing left
Just a hole above our heads
Letting the sunshine in
That's how the end begins
With a forest fire

In the corner of a foreign land
In the wind that blows the sand
There's the sting of a thousand lies
That burned up in a forest fire
We're burning up
In a clear blue sky
In a funeral pyre

In a big white lie
In a forest fire

Overall Meaning

The Dream Academy's song "Forest Fire" is a powerful commentary on the devastating effects of deforestation and environmental destruction. The song presents a bleak picture of a world where short-term greed and selfishness have caused irreversible damage to the earth. The lyrics talk about how people are cutting down and burning up the land, in their quest for short-lived cattle grazing land, and how this has led to asset stripping the medicine man. The song talks about the conflict of interest that lies in this behavior, where everyone is out for themselves and selling off cheap to avoid political heat. However, the consequence of such actions is the possibility of burning up in a forest fire, as well as the creation of a hole above our heads, bringing sunshine, but also signaling the end.

The lyrics also describe the impact of this environmental destruction on the weather and the atmosphere, where a black cloud rises in the sky, bringing different kinds of weather than what was known last year. Although it is taking a long time to address the issue, people are slowly chipping away at it, bit by bit. Unfortunately, this isn't enough as the song expresses the disbelief at how something that grew up for so long could be cut down so quickly, ultimately leading to the burning up of everything in a clear blue sky, funeral pyre, and big white lie.

Such a shame I never took it upon me to investigate this brilliant band any further .....
It must have been about 1986 or 1987, in my first or second year as a student, that I first heard and immediately adored the hit single "Life in a |Northern Town". One of the most eminent Belgian rock artists ever - Raymond van het Groenewoud - stated that true musical brilliance lies in making a song sound simple, as complicated as it may be. Well, that's what this band is all about. Their songs display this true musical brilliance!
