That's What You Always Say
The Dream Syndicate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd tell you that we've been through this
I know I've told you that before
I'd try to find out where we miss
But it gets to be such a chore
Ever since that time I told you it's so
Something gets my mind and I don't let go
And then the stories and words
They're here and gone
Cause that's what you always say
I'd try to sit and talk with you
But you know moods change all the time

I'd try to wait a week or two
But by then I'd probably changed my mind.

Overall Meaning

The Dream Syndicate's song "That's What You Always Say" is a prime example of how much human beings can struggle to connect with one another. Throughout the song, the singer seems to be fishing for reasons why their relationship isn't working, but they can never seem to find the source. The opening lines suggest that this isn't the first time the two have had this conversation, highlighting the repetition that can come with failing to fix something that's broken.

The singer then delves into the cyclical nature of their tendency to argue without resolution. They recall a time where they were unable to let go of a particular subject, leading to "stories and words" that ultimately went nowhere. And yet, even though they recognize this pattern, they can't seem to break free from it. When they attempt to initiate a conversation later on in the song, they acknowledge that "moods change all the time" and that they'll probably change their mind soon enough, further emphasizing the futility of trying to sustain a relationship.

I tell you that we've been through this
I know I've told you that before
I try to find out where we missed
I gets to be such a bore
'Cause ever since that time I told you so
Well, something gets my eye and I don't let go
And then the stories and words
They're here and gone
That's what you always say
I try to sit and talk with you but
You know how moods change all the time
I try to wait a week or two but
By then I'll probably change my mind
'Cause ever since that time I told you so
Well, something gets my eye and I don't let go
And then the stories and words
They're here and gone
That's what you always say
I try to sit and talk with you
You…

they opened for psychedelic furs at santa monica civic in 1982. which is nuts because I was 12 at the time. it was an amazing show for both bands. and this song was then and still is my favorite dream syndicate song ever.

Holly, I think we were at the same show. I was 17 at the time. My first show ever was also at the Santa Monica Civic, the Urgh! shows. Okay, we're older now, but we were lucky to catch the L.A. scene when we did. And I bet that's not the only good show you saw.

Mine also . Saw them play the album in 1983 at the Marquee , London. Saw P/Furs a few years afterwards in Birmingham

In the early eighties Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, and REM, ( among a few others) pulled me through some dark days.

I gotsta admit this music got me through a bad point in my life in the early to mid 80s. Really did. I'm an old fuck now but I still love this music, and, well even new hard rock.

TheEamoB

What a marvellous guitar song.
