Another Night With The Boys
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Looks like I'll spend another night with the boys
I tried, I called on the phone, but you weren't home again
I guess that you've made some other plans
So I'll just get out the cards
And round up a couple of hands
Looks like I'll spend another night with the boys
I know you are out on the town
You're runnin' around again
And if they ask me, if somebody ask me why I'm not with you oh yeah
I guess I'll have to confess
That I've been wondering too
Why must I be denied the thrill of your kiss
What did I do to you to be treated like this
Why must I spend another night with the boys
Although their good company
I'd much rather be with you
Why can't you tell me, why can't you tell me baby what I've done wrong

And let me spend all my nights with you
Where I belong

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' song "Another Night With The Boys" is a poetic lamentation about a man who finds himself spending yet another night without his desired female companion. He has attempted to reach her over the phone, but she is unresponsive, leading him to believe that she is out socializing elsewhere. He resigns to passing his time with a group of male friends, playing cards and such, but still yearns for his lover's presence. The singer is left with many unanswered questions about why his significant other continues to evade him, and what he might have done to deserve this treatment.

In essence, the lyrics of "Another Night With The Boys" illustrate a common theme in romantic relationships - the search for answers and certainty in an uncertain realm. The singer is tormented by the mystery of his lover's whereabouts and the inner workings of her mind. His efforts to contact her have been futile, leaving him with no choice but to seek solace with his male companions for one more evening. There is a sense of emotional confusion and frustration in the singer's delivery, as if he is pleading with his absent lover to provide him with some clarity.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
