Be-Bop-A-Lula
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Vaya con Dios, my darlin)
(Vaya con Dios, vaya con Dios, my love)

Now the hacienda is so dark, the town is sleeping
Now the time has come to part, the time for weeping
(Vaya con Dios, my darlin)
(Vaya con Dios, vaya con Dios, my love)
Now the village mission bell's softly ringing (bung, bung, bung)
And if you listen with your heart
You'll hear them singing (bung, bung, bung)
Singin' (vaya con Dios, my darlin)
(Vaya con Dios, vaya con Dios, my love)

Wherever you may be, I'll be beside you, oh, yes I will
Although you're many million dreams away
Each night I'll say a prayer, a prayer to guide you, oh, yes I will
To hasten every lonely hour of every long lonely day

Wow
Now the dawn is breaking through a gray tomorrow
But the memories that we share are still there to borrow
Oh-oh (vaya con Dios, my darlin')
Whoa (vaya con Dios, vaya con Dios, my love)

Whoa, whoa, whoa (vaya con Dios, my darlin')
Whoa (vaya con Dios, vaya con Dios, my love)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Be-Bop-A-Lula," while often connected with themes of youthful romance and carefree sensations encapsulated by the playful title, evolve in this rendition to convey a poignant farewell filled with longing and hope. The opening lines introduce a serene yet somber ambiance: a dark hacienda where the town is asleep, signaling that a quiet but significant moment has arrived, often associated with parting. The phrase "the time for weeping" acknowledges the sadness interwoven with goodbye, reflecting the emotional weight that such moments often carry. This juxtaposition of peace in the night against the backdrop of impending separation evokes a sense of melancholy, underscoring the inevitability of change and the bittersweet nature of goodbyes.

As the lyrics progress, the sound of a mission bell ringing introduces a sacred and almost ritualistic element to the farewell. The bell's soft tolling suggests a spiritual presence, perhaps symbolizing hope and guidance amidst sorrow. The lines about listening with one’s heart to hear the singing denounce a deeper emotional resonance; it speaks to the idea that love transcends physical distance. The phrase "vaya con Dios," which translates to "go with God," reinforces a sentiment of wishing the beloved well and is cloaked in a protective blessing, indicating a desire for the person's safe passage, whether it be on a journey or through life itself. This combination of spiritual undertones alongside the emotional turmoil of separation creates a rich tapestry of devotion and support.

The following stanza solidifies a promise of companionship that transcends physical separation. The singer reassures their love that they will always be by their side, even amid the uncertainties of life, and even across "many million dreams away." This expansive metaphor evokes the vastness of time and space, emphasizing that love persists regardless of how far apart individuals may be. The commitment to pray for guidance underlines the notion of supportive faith, suggesting that love can provide solace in times of loneliness. Such sentiments paint a picture of enduring love that serves as a beacon through life’s challenges, resonating with both hope and longing.

Finally, as the dawn breaks, representing new beginnings and the inevitability of change, the memories shared between the couple emerge as a source of comfort. They act as tangible reminders that remain accessible and can be "borrowed," suggesting a comforting nostalgia ingrained within the singer. Memories, when evoked, can alleviate loneliness, bridging the gap created by separation. The repetition of "vaya con Dios" in the concluding lines reverberates with deep emotion, encapsulating the essence of love, loss, and the powerful connection that withstands the trials of time and distance. Thus, while the lyrics reflect a beautiful farewell ritual, they also underscore the profound strength of love that endures throughout life’s journeys, mingling joy with sorrow in one cohesive emotional expression.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
