Bring It On Home
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you ever change your mind
About leavin', leavin' me behind
Bring it to me, bring your sweet lovin'
Bring it on home to me

You know I cried when you left
But I only, I only hurt myself, I'll forgive you
Bring it to me, bring your sweet lovin'
Bring it on home to me

I'll give you jewelry, some of that money too
But that ain't all, all I'd do for you, I said I forgive you, girl
Bring it to me, bring your sweet lovin'
Bring it on home to me

You know I cried when you left
I said I only, I only hurt myself, I'll forgive you
Bring it to me, bring your sweet lovin'
Bring it on home to me

I need your love, baby, I know

Bring it to me, bring your sweet lovin'
Bring it on home to me

Overall Meaning

The repeating chorus, "Bring it on home to me," is the man's plea to his lover to reconsider and return to their relationship. The second verse shows the man's vulnerability as he admits to crying and hurting himself when she left, but still forgiving her and welcoming her back. The bridge of the song follows the structure of a typical gospel choir arrangement, with the man listing the ways he will make it up to her if she returns, including giving her jewelry and money.

The repetition of the plea to "Bring it on home to me" throughout the song creates an urgent and emotional tone that emphasizes the man's desperation for his lover's return. I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
